On a practical level, that curved top plate would make it much easier to clean around the shutter speed dial! That part always bugs the hell out of me with normal squarish cameras.

Safe to say that there is no hot shoe at all?? Because anyone would have their regular M9-P with them as well, for situations that required that.

I highly doubt it. I just don't think it works that way with electronics. In 10-20 years this will be a crappy digital camera by that time's standards and it won't have any historical value either.

I'm not so sure, though, that this is a 'collector's camera'. Keep in mind that a Hermès handbag can easily cost $50'000 so the potential clientèle for this camera shouldn't really mind using a $50'000 camera kit.

90 Asph = 3k
28 = 4k
lenses cost about $21k, say you give it a 50% premium for the limited edition - that comes to $30k, give or take. That means the camera is $20k?

It's a beauty, but paying a 100% premium over the plebeian M9P?

Read my above post. I don't think collecting is really the reason for people to buy them. I think it's much more likely that these will be bought as gifts in wealthy circles.
Besides, JMQ forgot to factor in the price of the bag. Most Hermès bags are more expensive than an M9 🙂. Granted it's probably not a 'real' hermes bag (looks more like a re-branded Billingham) but hey, at Hermès even a simple belt can cost between $500-1000.

If you look at prices for the 2003 Hermès MP on the used market you can see that from a collectors point of view it wasn't that good an investment. Looks like at best it held it's value (that's not even considering inflation). I think collectors are more interested in buying rare vintage Leicas at auctions instead of new special editions.

By the way, I think the Leica M9P Hermès is really ugly. Reeally ugly.

I'm also of the opinion that it looks amazing. That little sweep to the top plate is so understated, but more graceful for it.

It is, of course, merely to be collected, not used, and not worth it's RRP, but that doesn't stop it being beautiful 🙂

I wonder how many of these ultra-special editions ever get taken out in the field and used.

For those of you with fashion-conscious women in your lives, ask them what an Hermes Birkin bag costs and how long it takes to get one (waiting list is years and I've heard prices over $20,000, with the plainest handbag going for $8K+).

Seems that a camera kit like this is not to be used for seeing things, but rather for being seen. Not my cup of tea, nor my budget. But there's an ass for every chair.

I'm a Leica shooter, but frankly these Hermes edition are too much for me. Garish and silly. Show-off neckwear for people who will never really shoot them. Or if they do,will never use the camera beyond bad "happy snaps." A bit like giving a Formula 1 racer to a "Sunday driver"....
