my macbook is in the shop and i have been using my ipad for net surfing...i just bought a vga cable to hook the ipad to my bigger monitor...it is not working...nothing happens when i plug it in...so, the adapter goes from the monitor cable to the ipad?
should this not work automatically or do i need to press a magic button somewhere?

I have not tried to do what you want to do on my iPad 1 but Apple seems to show an adaptor and cable are necessary: <http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/mirroring.html>

To my knowledge the screen mirroring only works via HDMI and on the iPad 2. You have to have that little adapter cable from Apple which allows you to plug in both an HDMI and a 30-pin dock connector for power.
I have never attempted to connect an iPad to a regular monitor, but I have seen them running on an HDTV and it was excellent.

You can only view Movies, Slideshows and Keynote presentations on an external monitor with the iPad

the ipad runs mobile safari so many things you expect to work can be frustrateing at best . the unit is designed to be hooked to a larger computer . there is probably a way to do it , unfortunately with the ipad there way not be an app for it contrary to what apple has us believe .
i love apple computers , the ipad was a stretch for me - i thought it might be my only computer - that did not work out .
still the ipad is pretty amazeing at what it can do .
