I don't want to get into Mac vs. PC (I use a Mac and would not use anything else, but you can do good work on a Windows or Linux box also) but wanted to mention something worth knowing about Adobe Photoshop.
Unlike many software companies, Adobe's software license expressly permits you to install the software on both a "work" computer and a "home" computer, as long as both copies are never in use at the same time.
So yes, Photoshop is expensive -- but if you can convince your employer that you need a copy at work, it's perfectly legal for you install that copy on your home computer as well. (And your boss should be happy about that, because the extra practice you get on your own time will pay off in increased productivity at work!)
