Mac Pro Aperture User Asks Why Lightroom?

I just scanned my first color 6x7 and I discovered that Aperture won't display 48 bit TIFF images. Photoshop CS3 does just fine with 48bit. Does Lightroom handle this image format?

I've got 20K images in Aperture and I've got my workflow down with my DSLR. What advantages are provided, or lost with processing digitized film images in the most recent version of L.R. vs. Aperture.

Someone must have some insight here.

When scanned files in TIFF are larger than some number above 100MB, Aperture reports that it is unsupported. Same format reduced in PS and all is OK. Also, I can't use the clone stamp in Aperture on these files. This makes Aperture unacceptable. Does Lightroom fix these issues? I have money and time invested in Aperture and plug-ins, but it just isn't working with these files.

I have opened 100mb plus files in lightroom 2 and 3 beta in the past. Never used aperature, though I use mac. I haven't worked on any files of that size for some time though, so don't know if clone stamp works or not. I just know that you can open files of the size.

You can download a trial of Lightroom 2 or Lightroom 3 beta on the Adobe website. I've embedded the links into the names of the program.

EDIT: Apple is supposed to be releasing Aperature X soon. Last release date rumored was March 2010, though some believed end of this year. A rumor as of now though.

I used my school's Hassy X1 film scanner recently.
Was kicking out 300+MB scans from a 645 neg.
It was running pretty slowly in Lightroom, and my one attempt to clone something didn't work. Perplexed me somewhat, but that might answer your question.

I have 4x5 16-bit (as Aperture labels them- I assume that's 48-bit with RGB) TIFF scans (from an Imacon) which are about 396mb, and they open and can be processed in Aperture without any problem (other than being a bit slow). Sorry if I'm missing something here....

I've not looked into this but there have been several recent posts on forums (can't remember specifics, but google search should help) about working on a small version of the file (a lot faster processing) and then copy/paste the settings onto the large file. Should be able to do that in Aperture? Of course, since you can't display those large files, maybe you can't paste in Aperture. and then there's the display issue, so maybe this won't work.
