I decided to upgrade my Early 2008 Mac Pro and have managed to get all the hardware to work. I thought that I would share the combination in that some of this has taken a bit of research prior to purchasing. Adding USB 3.0 has been a long time coming and in some cases, with some cards, only work with selective devices.

#1. Allegro USB 3.0 PCIe card now working with new USB 3.0 external raid array and Lexar's 3.0 card reader. The Allegro won't work with USB 3.0 hubs. Card reader has been used only once..will see if stable.

#2 OWC 120GB Extreme SSD working great as primary drive... Need Newertechnology AdaptaDrive 3.5" to 2.5" SATA Adapter Bracket.

#3 Drobo working in Firewire 800 mode with Best Connectivity TI XIO2213 Firewire card. (Onboard firewire was messing up my scanning and causing Vuescan to freeze.)

#4 Now that I know all of this is workng, I will add two old 30GB Vertex SSDs stripped for fast onboard temporary storage.

Also have yet another RAID external drive working .. the old 3ware Sidecar.. and all is getting along nicely.

Really fast machine and a lot cheaper than buying new.

I should mention that LaCie Firewire 800 card worked for a few hours and died.

Hows the card reader working out?

Hows the card reader working out?

I too have an Early 2008 Mac Pro and am trying to get the most out of my Sandisk 95 MB/s UHS-I SD card. I bought the Highpoint USB 3.0 HBA card and a Sandisk card reader, but later found out the Highpoint doesn't support card readers, only drives. Based on your results, I'm ready to replace the Highpoint with the Sonnet Allegro, and may have to replace the Sandisk with the Lexar, but wanted to check how the stability has been and how well you like it. You seem to be the only one on the internet with some success connecting USB 3.0 card readers to a Mac Pro. Thanks.
