MacWorld those evil digital cameras

I'm attending MacWorld; one of the benefits of working for Conde Nast.i
I looked and handled the high end Cannon and Nikon yesterday and today. Very heavy, I don't know if I could carry them all day. Price: $5k. Which surprised me since everyone here is moaning about the M8's price. I thought Cannon and Nikon would be much cheaper BUT.........

Something else, I asked about lenses, since if I bought anything but a Leica i'd have to buy all new lenses. What I was told is that when you go digital fixed lenses are really no better than the zoom. Is that true????? and Why would that be true??

Not true with Nikon. While I'm not buying a D3, I am a D300 for the very reason I can use my old AI lenses on her. I've got a three lens main system ready for the body, a few other lenses in case I need and I am set. I may trade in my 180/2.8 ED for an AF version, but I'm a prime lens sort of guy.

Canon makes you get all new stuff, but Nikon works quite fine in most every mode with the older (AI and newer) lenses.

how good are they? i was not happy with the prints they both had displayed. they seemed to be .5 to 1 grade of paper off. Their weight turned me off but:

I walked out of the show started shooting and forgot I was at 1/30 not 1/250 [i had changed when I when the floor]. Maybe the weight is worth not being stupid.

AND I went the SFMOMA and I saw my first Robert Frank, Walker Evens, and Lee Friedlander PRINTS . Very sweet.

Considering many faults of most zooms lie in the perimeter of the image, it's kind of true that a 1.6 crop DSLR eliminates many of the issues with zooms. But the reality is that a lens is about more than center sharpness. Issues like color, out-of-focus highlights, and weight don't change just because you are using a DSLR. Whoever was trying to convince you that prime lenses are no better than zooms on a DSLR probably believes it, but they are wrong on many levels.

I miss MacWorld!

The D3 is a beast, but the D40X is reasonable. The D300 is between both, I've handled a D200 (about the same) and she is lighter than my F2A with an MD3 and Battery Pack. She's no M4-P, but I did not feel that I would be carrying around too much.

An S3 with 50/1.4 comes in around 580 gm.
An F2 Photomic (no lens) tips the scale at around 1140 gm.
A M6 classic (no lens) around 600 gm
A D300 (no lens) comes in at 903 gm with battery.
The D3 is a hefty 1240 gm without battery!

While the Nikon glass is bigger than the Zuiko or most RF, the primes are fine.
