Mafia Don's Funeral

I live in Oz remember ... I don't always have the choice.

'Six Feet Under' was very good but it went horribly astray towards the end IMO.

I'm a bit of a 'Dexter' fan actually! 😀

Find a way to get "The Wire" on DVD. It the best series in the history of television. Absolutely brilliant. You won't regret it.

If it hadn't been for Berlusconi's crack down on the Sicilian mafia, sending busloads of members to jail, Italy would have seen a major mafia drug war right now, according to an article in the news over here.

Many people say that Berlusconi's "crack down on the mafia" was part of an mafia-internal clean-up as Berlusconi's said to have ties to the mafia.

Yeah, in Russia the heads of the mafia type clans are typically Russians ie Ostankino and Lubertsy.

Maybe there are some separate French - Canadian mafia style families?

I think it's a bit of a stretch speaking of a Russian "mafia" as I think the Russian crime organizations are structured differently.

Wikipedia says that this Rizzuto guy and the crime family he was part of was an offspring of a Sicilian crime organization so I think it's warranted to use the term mafia.

+1 for "the wire". But I really enjoyed watching big T and his shrink in the Sopranos...I love Dexter too for different reasons.
We have different Mafias operating in the south of France, and Corsica is a bit of a special place too with Mafia and separatists intermingled, blowing properties belonging to mainland French people if they failed to pay their dues to the cause...

I'm just now getting towards the end of The Sopranos. Haven't watched The Wire yet but my brother is currently watching it and is not that impressed, especially compared to The Sopranos. The other day he said he may even stop watching it altogether.

great work, most of the shots i've seen in the Toronto media don't come close. Personally number 3 does it for me but # 2 is also excellent. I also popped in and looked at the flickr group you put them in and your's are by far the best there so far.
montreal is canada's organized crime capitol between the rizzutos and the bike gang wars of a few years back. we have a few nasty characters down my way as well ( there was a heavily fortified hell's angels clubhouse around the corner from me - kept the neighbourhood relatively crime free when the police shut it down break ins went up..... guess the b&e guys didn't want to take the chance of breaking into an angels house before that)

I rather liked number 3.....even without the context it is a good pic.
The perspective on number 4 does not work as well.....

#1 screams out for x pan :0

#2 and #3...either be closer or furthur away ...closer will getmore feeling and farther will get more context

i liked all of them and would liek to see more..

we have both the "real" mafia and the Dixie mafia down here!

Gotta love people's fascination with The Mafia... But the myth of Mafia in America at least is pretty much a creation of Hollywood.

At first Hollywood portrayed Mafia people as grotesque looking gangsters who spoke very badly and were not very smart, then finally with the Godfather series, they became suave and handsome looking strategists... Then came Goodfellas and the myth become completely entrenched.

Nevertheless, The Sopranos truly demystified the Mafia and I don't think anyone can take the Godfather series seriously after watching The Sopranos.

But then again, if you wish to see a masterpiece of a drama based on true street crime and poverty in America, then you owe it to yourself to watch The Wire.

Instead of watching Hollywood's interpretation of the mafia, as a sort of entertainment, why not try to follow what is happening in the true life? I can recommend Clare Stirling's shocking book; 'The Long Reach of the Sicilian Mafia' - or this page: http://www.ganglandnews.com/

I can assure you that 'real life' is far more shocking - and fascinating than anything 'fictitious'.

I can assure you that 'real life' is far more shocking - and fascinating than anything 'fictitious'.

I think that the topic of the Mafia lends itself to fiction because all the codes, rules, hierarchical structure and idiosyncrasies of Italian (or American Italian) culture provide a great framework in which stories can unfold.
I'm sure that 'real life' crime is more shocking (it's real afterall) and perhaps even more fascinating but somehow I'm not that interested in Mafia gossip.
