I've been waiting quite some time for the Leica 1.25 magnifier, and it finally arrived. Of course, it does what it's supposed to do (surprise coming.) On my 0.85 M7, it blows up the 75mm lines very nicely, with the 50mm being just visible at full frame. (The 35mm lines disappear.) And focusing with the 90mm cron should be more accurate, for me. Also, it has a rubber ring that will prevent marring eyeglasses; I appreciate that.

With the total mag at 1.06, shooting with both eyes open seems quite comfortable.

Here's the surprise, especially interesting for a HRF owner. If the magnifier is placed over the eyepiece of the Hexar, you now have a 0.75 VF. It fits nicely into the recess on the HRF VF and is in focus there. All that's needed is a means to hold it in place. I'll bet Tim Isaacs could easily design an inexpensive adapter.

I think this is the end of GAS for me. 😀

Harry

P.S. I'll copy and paste this message to the HRF forum.

I've tried it. You can just see the 28mm framelines. Still not enough magnification to allow "both eyes open" shooting. The magnifier works on the Nikon eye piece as well; I've yet to try a Nikon magnifier on the hexar. Dan Stella on the yahoo group for the hexar RF did and said it works.

Megapearls makes a snap-on adapter ($35) that adapts the Hexar's eyepiece to Leica thread. It is a tight friction fit over the existing rubberized eyepiece. Add on a 1.25x of your choice (like Leica, HKsupplies, etc). I would consider thread locking the magnifier to the adapter to prevent contact with the eyepiece glass (some magnifiers, like HK supplies, screw in pact the end of the threads). Easy.

It seems that they don't sell it to USA. Correct?

ANOTHER SNIP

Because I've been away for a bit, I'm just now seeing, from these posts, that my "discovery" is old news, and that an adapter is already available. That's great!

Just took delivery on the Megaperls Hexar RF eyepiece adapter and it's a perfect fit! Nice and snug and it just barely clears the hinged back when opened. Now all Leica M eyepiece accessories fit my HRF. Adding an accessory +1 diopter lens dramatically improves rf patch sharpness by taking the finder power from -1 diopter to 0 (plano). It's so clear and sharp now that unless I'm shooting with my 90/2 or 135/4, the 1.25x magnifier is not really needed.

Could you post a photo of it fitted on camera? Also, what about the VF info/framelines - well seen with this adapter? Thanks in advance.

I've just ordered the Megaperls adapter for the HRF. Coupling it with the 1.25x Leica magnifier should give me added focusing accuracy, especially for the longer focal lengths.

Don't have a picture yet but could post it later if you really want me to do so. It's rather straightforward. The adapter is a metal black ring with a straight lip that grabs onto the rubber bezel of the eyepiece. The adapter has a threaded hole in the center to accept Leica accessories. Expensive for what it is but works like a charm so you might want to order two if you're worried about losing one. The adapter by itself doesn't cut off any field but with the magnifier attached, it's tough to see the 28 frame or shutter speed display on the left side without turning the eye/head a little.

I see you are selling it already - wonder why? Did it not work as expected? Whats wrong with it? I was thinking to get one too, but now....well, I'll wait to see what you answer.

I mainly got it to allow the use of a +1 diopter eyepiece correction lens to neutralize the -1 diopter power of the HRF power. Now that I've been able to obtain a 0 diopter eyepiece for the HRF, I've sold the +1 diopter. The setup works well enough so that my shorter focus throw 90/2.8 Elmarit works well enough for the HRF. I'll use the 90/2 with my MP.

I just received the Megaperls adapter. It's a press fit that will not come off the HRF accidentally. With the increased mag the shutter speed indicator is pushed off to the right somewhat but shouldn't be a problem. I expect that focussing will be much improved for the 75mm and, especially, the 90mm. Somewhat pricey for this bit of plastic though.

Edit: Pushed of to the left, that is.
