Magnum Print Sale this week

WOW these are gorgeous pics, historically important.

Being able to get a print off these original negatives is not something I can normally afford,

all are a best buy at $100 - and then some

take a look, you may be astounded as I was at their scope and beauty

I did buy four a few years back. In retrospect, I got Fujicolor Crystal Archive prints for $100 each (translates to €110, wtf??). Sure, it's advertised "Signed or Estate-Stamped", and you mind reads "signed", but mine were just "stamped". Can someone explain to me the "estate" part?
$100 will buy two-three nice photo books, or one rather expensive one; Better value to me.
As to the Red Cross benefit, while not donate the 100% of whatever money you can part with direct to Red cross?

They are signed if the photographer is alive or capable - it has always been clearly disclosed.
Magnum administers the distribution rights of many of it's deceased members and can make official prints, but obviously not signed as the photographer is dead, thus estate stamped.
There are a few exceptions which is disclosed as well, Elliott Erwitt, well into his 90's, probably can’t sign the 100's of his images sold at every square print sale, so they are stamped.
Prints in EURO is sold including VAT, those in US$ is without tax, which explains the price difference.

Whether it is reasonable that they donate 50% and not 100% to Red Cross is entirely up to you. You are free to donate 100% if you wish.

I agree. It is a great opportunity which I have made use of several times now.

One should be aware that these are prints made from a digital file printed onto Crystal Archive color paper - not directly from a negative nor on BW silver gelatin paper in case you buy a black and white print.
This is probably no different from the way the larger and much more expensive Magnum prints are made.

The prints are signed or stamped on a label attached to the back of the print and it is unlikely that the photographer or estate representative have had the actual photograph in hand - not something that bothers me, but others might have a different opinion.

This time I am going to buy Alec Soth's iconic gas station photo: Cemetery. Fountain City, Wisconsin. 2002 . I own an unsigned copy of Sleeping by the Mississippi (from where this photo is taken) and this photo will be a great supplement.
Buying a signed photograph by Alec Soth from Fraenkel Gallery will likely set you back thousands of $ - this is the only way I can afford it and I appreciate the opportunity.

I like these sales and there are some great images in this one that just started! Here's what they look like on the wall if you order them framed. These are Herbert List and Rene Burri images, purchased in one of the past Magnum square print sales. Though costs can add up fast, I do like ordering sets of things, as opposed to one-off images, so that I make an interesting-to-me arrangement on the wall. 6x6 is a small object when hung on the wall. This set is of famous black and white photos that employ clever optical tricks.

I tend to agree. Not particularly impressive especially for images not in the square format. I purchased 3 in the past, and then recently I was at a Martin Parr exhibit and picked up a free postcard of the exhibit with one of his famous tennis shots. I framed that postcard and put it next to the magnum print (all 4x6 also due to the 35mm format). The postcard gives me the same joy as the Magnum images. The only advantage of the Magnum ones is that 2 of the three are signed, but the signatures do not enhance the images on the front. Additionally, I was shocked at the poor packaging from Magnum: the images were each in an acetate envelope with open sides, and the three envelopes where placed in a FedEx/DHL-style envelope with a cardboard stiffener. No form of waterproofing at all. Very shortsighted. The day the envelope was delivered it was raining hard and fortunately I came home to retrieve the package from the rain just in time or the photos would have been ruined for sure. I'm glad I tried the service, but next time I have a few hundred dollars to spend on photography I'll by Trent Parke's Minutes to Midnight. That's next on my "want list".

That's essentially what happened to my 1st edition of Minutes to Midnight when it was first released except it did warp my book. Powels books refunded me cost of the book as they couldn't get more copies. Sigh
