Mamiya 6 curtain damaged. Please advice.

Hi Guys,

I can buy a Mamiya 6 with 75 mm lens for 600 euro. Only thing is the Light curtain was broken so it was removed by a repairman.

Changing lenses would result in one exposure wasted. (only have one lens)

Any idea what adding a new curtain would cost? My repairman is on holidays so i can't ask.

Any advice highly appreciated!

Should I buy it for the price (seems a 'cheap' way to get a M6 with lens and be happy and go shooting. Or have it repaired or not bother because it can't be fixed anyway..?

I got mine with 75mm lens for $1100, and it works flawlessly. I bet for not much more than 600 Euro you can get one in better condition. I'd wait and buy a different one.

You could call the Mamiya Service and ask if they can tell you a price for the repair.
I had my Mamiya 6 at the German Mamiya Service in Munich last year and they were quite friendly on the telephone.

I wouldn't bother .. I've a Mamiya7 and barely change lenses mid-roll. Actually sold my second lens.
600 euros is a great price .. if that combo would come with the 50mm I'd ask you for the sellers contact 😀

Prices here in Europe for used equipment are mostly a bit higher. Except for East German and FSU stuff maybe.

I have contacted Mamiya service and they will get back to me. Sounds like a change of the curtains would easily cost 400/500 euros. That would be to much or I would have to decide to leave it since I don't want to have a load of lenses. I do see the need of a 50mm.

Another M6 with the 50 lens would maybe be the better choice but I don't want to pay to much for a system. (should never have sold my Rolleiflex for the M8..)
A Bronica Rf645 is also appealing..

You also need to think about resale value. I'd ask for a price reduction until the camera was at market price subtracting the cost of the quoted repair. That's fair and it saves the seller from dealing with the repair himself

I've been tempted by the Bronica a few times over the years but the trouble with it is that you will be shooting in portrait format all the time with the camera in it's normal position. Couldn't live with having to shoot the "wrong way" round all the time. Nice camera other than that though.

You've had a Rolleiflex and miss it so obviously enjoy shooting 6x6 so it's a no brainer really for you. I sold my Rolleiflex to buy a Mamiya 6 and it's easily been my best camera buying decision yet. Take the plunge, you'll love it! 🙂

Seller is not going to lower the price of the M6 without curtains so I looked around and found a Mamiya 6 with 50mm an 150mm for 1200 euro.
Totally different amount but with the nice 50mm and a 150 maybe for portraits.

Any views on this kind of money for a set like this? In Japan prices are lower but with customs fees etc. in europe..
