Hello,

My newly bought Mamiya C220 f is heading its way through the postal service. I put in a lowish bid for it on a local ebay site. It was clearly stated it was missing a part but I took a chance anyway.

Here's the issue, I need to get the upper film spool knob (I suppose it is this that's missing, correct me if I am wrong). I'll be sad indeed if it's a dealbreaker...

I tried the local official distributor but they couldn't help. Does anyone know where I can get a spare one and if it is easy to repair?

Thanks for any help!

I don't think the missing part is essential to operating the camera. I believe it just functions cosmetically. The button is part of the mechanism for unlocking the back. Try pushing in the exposed (shiny metal) button while pushing down on the grooved plastic tab that's mounted around it. This should open the back of the camera.
Here's a link to a page in the manual for the 330s that explains the procedure with illustrations:

The 220f locking mechanism works the same way.

Sorry, it turns out the link will only take you to the first page of the manual. The info is on page 11.

Yeah, if it's the same as the 330S then you should be able to open the back OK without the knob.

You're supposed to pull the knob out to remove the take-up spool, but you might be able to find a way around that or perhaps you could attach something (maybe using that screw?) so that you can get a grip on it.

Actually the knob you need to pull out to remove the exposed film is on the other side of the camera. The only function of the knob in Jerevan's picture is as part of the back locking mechanism, and it's pushed in (not pulled out) to open the back.

If it is like summar says, I'll be home free. And if I need to pull the non-existent knob to insert a film spool, I'll see what I can make up as an interim until I find a spare part.

Thanks a lot for your help! I'll try to get back with more comments how I get along with the camera.

Well, I got the camera. I've had no luck trying to open the back. At the moment I think I am stuck with a paper weight unless someone can direct me to someone who has spare parts for a C220 f or C330s (which has the same knob). The camera is in beautiful condition but impossible to use right now.

So, if I can't find a spare I'll either have to sell the lens, shade and paramender 2 to re-coup some of the expense or else buy another camera...

Yeah, looking at my C330 again you would need to find some tubing the same diameter and thickness as the missing knob to insert around that metal plate with the screw in order to open the back. Have you tried taking out that screw to see what's underneath? You must be able to get that part somewhere - see if you can find any old Mamiya camera techicians in Sweden or nearby (although it seems like you're in a Hasselblad kind of town...). Good luck!

Thanks Wayno, I am indeed in a Hasselblad kind of town. :) I tried quite a few people, asking about spares or repar but no luck as yet. Next up is trying the 'bay. I hope I can get it up and running soon.

There are 2 steps to opening the back: (1) push in on the button (that is missing) and (2) slide the lever next to the missing button down. From your picture, the button is missing but the lever is there. It looks as if you should be able to push on the screw and still slide the lever down.

Wes,

After a good while of poking and prodding, I was able to do what you say, but it is a small pin under the screw/washer that needs to be pushed into the camera, then moving the lever to open the back. So I am able to open the back now.

I also have been in contact with Mamiya in Germany after a tip, and as far as I understood, they may have spares. The problem is that they only ship spares to a german adress...
