I had a moment of weakness yesterday evening and opened up the Mamiya C3 (needed to tighten the strap lug).

I had a peek at the screen too - it is a sandwich construction, with glass on top and a plastic fresnel underneath, which seems to be glued together (yellowish glop at strategic points). The plastic or the glass (don't know which) would need some cleaning to perform at its best.

Has anyone tried to separate them?

I've never seen these glued together, they've always just been 2 separate pieces - frosted glass on top, plastic Fresnel field lens underneath, held together by the spring clips that hold them onto the frame.

Just remove one clip, and loosen the other, and slide out the screen. Before you remove it though, make a note of which side the focusing scale is on (if the screen you are using has one). Also, be very careful not to lose the small washers and paper spacers when you remove the focusing screen housing, or the camera may not focus correctly, they must go back to their original places. The fresnel and screen are not glued together, and are easy to clean, just do it gently.
