Mamiya Universal / Polaroid 600 SE lens problem

Hi All,

I just bought a Polaroid 600 SE, C/W 150mm lens from eBay.

The shutter is fired by a cable release which threads into an insert fixed into a small bracket mounted on the lens barrel. Unfortunately the female thread on the insert appears to be cross threaded which only allows 1.5 threads of the cable release to be engaged. The insert flexes within the housing slightly when the trigger is pulled and occasionally allows the shutter release 'prong' to slip past the shutter trigger plate. Apologies for the poor terminology in my description of the problem!

Does anyone know if its possible to get the small insert replaced? I'm fairly sure if I don't do something about it that it'll end up breaking.

The insert is on a tab that sticks up from a ring under the lens mount that circles around the lens base and has a post on the other side of the lens that triggers the shutter. This chrome flat ring has a tiny return spring on it.

The ring is often available from junk helicals or lenses and most would have a good ring. I think I have a couple of these around, and if you PM me, I'll look around. I believe the ring is universal from lens to lens focal length as it's a part of the front end of the lens helical barrel. The other common problem is the post, which is press fit into the flat chrome ring and trips the shutter, often comes out of it's hole if bumped around a lot.

If I can find one of my spares on this part, it will have a good insert and you can see about exchanging that part. Me, I'd just replace the ring itself.

You are aware that the standard release cable socket is a conical thread? It should not take more than two rotations in any case.

Thanks for your replies. Here's a detail picture from the Ebay listing showing the cable release fixed into the mounting on the lens.

When I checked my 75mm lens the cable release threaded in fully, which I can't do on the 150mm. So I'm certain it's the thread on the insert that's in need of replacement.

If you look at the detail photo, you can see that the cable release is pointed off center of the shutter lever.

Does not look obviously wrong for me, going by what is visible on that picture. With the Mamiya cable for the magazine triggers and a near mint late (rubber grip) 100mm it should look like on the attached image, but YMMV with less well matched components - Mamiya went through several cable and socket types.
