Just bought one for my R-D1
Works really well, I'm sure it'll be really useful in very low light. Just testing it out indoors in almost pitch dark I can get a speed of 1/60 at ISO1200. Very cool!

If only it could be dimmed instead of just on/off.

I think the larger version can be.
I have used large panels of these lights for studio work and really like them. I can also use this bar on my vintage camera and the meter will still read from the objective properly.

Might go ahead and get one for the M4/3. The price is right.

There are some cheaper ones on eBay from China which are probably also fine. My father is a TV cameraman and he has two huge panels which he bought from China which have seen lots of use and have been excellent. They take the same powerpacks as his camera so they are pretty useful.
I think I paid £30ish for the Manfrotto small version. I'll post some pictures from it later.

Hi, very interesting! Do you mean you used it on a vintage film camera? Is the result good? I am thinking of using it with a M3. I presume you can just shoot closer objects if you use it with film camera. Am I correct? Thanks.

The best camera is one that still works!
You can do the same thing with those LED head torches the outdoor types use and if you're bundering around in the dark the light will go wherever you turn your head which in some instances may be better than having it fixed to your camera.

There's a 24-LED version too.
EDIT: and the video from the linked page (first post) also shows a dimmable 36-LED version. WOOHOO!
And an 84-LED version.

If you guys want cheap-ish LED lights, maybe check the camera/photo section at a site like www.dealextreme.com or www.focalprice.com
No connection with either... I've had good experiences with both, and you can get stuff pretty damn cheap.
Good example at DX:

It's my R-D1, f1.9 at 1/125 ISO800 at a distance of 1m. Lens is VC 28mm Ultron (42mm equiv)
Just a snap really but wanted to show how well the light works at shirt distance. I'll play around some more later, I have a feeling this will work best in tight dim indoor areas like pubs.

i use a 8x8 led light, no more than 6x6cm with a shoe adapter, with great effect. At around 1.5 m, at iso 800, i get f4 and 1/30; with the high button turned on, i get f4 and 1/60. the smaller 6x6cm box gives a more rapid fall off of light. great for artistic effect.
here's a pic. iso 800, f4 and 1/30 (or 1/60). Tmax 3200 pulled to 800 and developed in Prescysol EF.
the led light cost around $60, this is a china brand YONGNUO SYD-0808.
