These big camera stores are very courteous and reliable.
Map, Bic, Yodobashi, Fujiya...
Map is advertising a used, like new rd1s for 198,000 Yen.
Right next building across the street from Map #1 store is Yodobashi, you may want to check them out too.
Right in the same block, West Shinjiku 1-13-2 (Map #2 store address is West Shinjiku 1-13-6) is a store called Shinjiku Used Camera Market, 2nd fl of Matsuhara building. Maybe, I don't know, have used rd1s...Good luck. I envy you, being in Tokyo..

I bought my M4-P / M4 from Map camera. 6 month warranty, very fast delivery (ordered via their homepage) Both cameras were in very good conditions.

OH!!!!! this is soooooooo bad..... GAS:bang:

thanks guys!!!!!

btw, i would love to be of help to anyone if you require price / availability checks at these stores.

=)

Bought my R-D1 (and many other items) at Map Camera in Shinjuku last year. No point card system, but they do have a warranty on their used products.
FYI, they have 2 stores in Shinjuku very near each other. I forget which one has a great selection of lenses in the basement..just ask the salesperson.
They also had beautifully made Artist&Artisan half-cases for the R-D1 (but were said to not be making them anymore...not sure if any are left).

5 years living in Tokyo, I wouldn't recommend big purchases at Yodobashi or Bic Camera. They never have good deals and the Point system isn't that great since you have to buy something else at full price to use them. If you know where to go in Tokyo you can get a MUCH better deal. Map Camera and Sanpo Camera (this one is hard to get to...I drive so not sure how to get there by train) or internet shops are the way to go.

Good luck!

After 16 years in Japan, Yodobashi camera is a great place to get new gear. The point system is good - it is simply a discount on the next purchase and it is taken off their sticker price. The used market is OK, but their are not large discounts compared to new. Yahoo Japan has some good buys if you like internet auctions.

I love Map Camera! They are one of my favorite camera stores in the world.

Though I haven't bought from MAP yet, they definitely have a tantalizing collection, and helpful staff.

I get the impression alot of the smaller used camera shops around Tokyo peg their prices based on what MAP assess' their cameras at. I was in a shop in Akasaka recently where two of the clerks were deciding on how to price a used Nikon rangefinder that had just come in; without batting an eye one of the clerks went over to their PC/web terminal and commented that "MAP has it priced at...". The staff went on to compare the conditions of their camera vs MAP's.

...The same shop also had a Hexar RF priced at 88,000 yen. Later that evening I checked MAP's website and they also had 2 priced at 88,000. Since then I've seen 2-3 more around Tokyo at other shops, also priced at 88,000 yen... kinda takes the fun (and in some cases, the "point") out of shopping around... :)

I bought a CV 28/3.5 for Contax from them on eBay. It was a pleasant transaction. If I need something fancy, new, or rare (or all three) I'd not hesitate do business with them again.

I agree to some extent with new non-pro equipment. I've rarely (if ever now that I think about it) found them priced better than prices on Kakaku.com or at MAP camera. Nice if you've got points to burn...for me I'd rather have 10% cash saved than 15% put on a point card to pay sticker price at some future date.

In my opinion, and the other Japanese professional photographers I work with, if you live in Tokyo, you can find better prices than Yodobashi or Bic.

Well, I don't know about amateur equipment, I have only bought professional equipment at Yodobashi camera and the prices were similar to the pro shops or better. The 15% in points bought a lot of film.

Wel, I am not sure about all professionals. A few pointed me to Gin-Ichi in Ginza, which had stupid prices.

Yahoo auctions sometimes have good deals (I got my M6, M3, and MP this way). But sometimes prices are crazy... If "Leica" is written on something, prices can go up. I remember a front cap for the Summitar being sold for 14.000 Yen ... (I payed 30.000 for the lens with front cap)

hi all...

thanks for all your info!!!

I'm going there tonight. (map camera). Wondering if i should leave my wallet/cashcard at home first. Help meee......
