My Lynx-14 has arrived back today. It must be a brand new camera...looks beautiful, shutter works wonderfully, self timer is no longer slow, meter works again and slower shutter speeds are no longer blocked. I expected it to look good, but this is just great. Can't wait to go out shooting.

i talked to him last week. he said he now had to find a second parts camera to fix mine. seems like he couldve built a new one by now. its been 5.5 months now and ive been calling him every couple of weeks only to hear the same thing every time. c'est la vie.
 
I am going to go out on a limb here, and predict that you will soon get your camera back, just like new or better... you can almost bank on it! Yes, you are correct; 5.5 months is indeed a LONG time to wait for a repair.

BUT... I can totally understand how difficult a job a camera repairman must have. Not being able to make an accurate "guess"timate as to what is required/how long to fix, etc. until you are right into the guts of it... and even then, well... there's always an extra surprise or two! And of course finding (and sometimes making) parts for vintage cameras can certainly be a nightmare. All this on top of the fact that he is a very well-known, and thus extremely busy fellow running a one man operation; I can surely see why each and every customer may not be completely pleased all of the time.

Looking forward to seeing a post from you soon, letting us all know that you are extremely pleased with your "new" camera. Hang in there a little longer!

Not sure if this sense of dispair has to do with this being your only camera,but,I'm sure I can arrange to send you something to use in the interim( rangefinder or tlr come to mind )

i dont need the camera back right away or anything. when i sent it out, the only camera i had was a xa with an almost invisible rangefinder patch but i have since purchased a m6. i was just worried that it would get pushed to the back of the work bench and never finished. im just going to keep checking in every couple of weeks and hope for the best.
 
Eventually you could take the matter to small claims court.

Old man or not, it's not OK to keep customers' merchandise and money for months on end and refuse to communicate. In the old days people had apprentices for that sort of thing, with the added benefit that someone would continue the business after your own retirement.

A valid point. It seems like in this digital age, the majority of the well-known/well-regarded repair people around are from an earlier era. For the time being, film, while almost put in the grave by digital, seems to be experiencing a bit of a resurgence, even by the younger generation (myself included, having been weaned on a dSLR). However, I'm worried that someday, when the established gurus have closed up shop, we film shooters are going to be in a tight spot.

These guys/women have been working on film cameras for at least a few decades. Without any apprentices in training, who's going to bear the torch and continue servicing the already-wounded/dwindling film-users group? Because that's pretty much the only way to train someone who's going to be working on servicing old cameras. One of the massive benefits of film is that old cameras are both plentiful and cheap, and the best of which have established repair service around the globe. Without that, though........ things could go south pretty quick...
 
I sent Mark my Hi-Matic 9 for repair. Sticky shutter and a good cleaning. It has been about 2 weeks but I have no worries since I have enough cameras around here. I'll update once it has been returned though I expect everything will be good.

Some things just take time....
 
I just got a call from Mark. Seems as though he finally got his hands on a good parts camera and will have mine fixed in a couple of weeks. Im pretty excited, even though money is short now and I'll probably have to sell it.
 
Just an update. I got the camera today. Only took 9 months. Cant say that I would send him another one but he did a great job on this one.

Update:

Finally popped back into this thread to say that after 2.5 months the Hi-Matic 9 has been returned and tested. I have a couple more cameras to send off for repair to Mark.

It may take a bit longer than I would like but he does excellent work and is a great guy.

Like I said in my last post, I have enough cameras to keep me busy taking photos with so I am never in a rush.
