Martin Parr on CBC radio Oct 18

Martin Parr is on Q with Gian Ghomeshi on Thursday morning today, soon. I missed it live, but because of the different timezones, I will be tuning in via iTunes either at 11 a.m. Edmonton time, or 11 a.m Vancouver time (i.e. 1 p.m. Toronto time or 2 p.m. Toronto time. The various CBC Radio One options are available in the iTunes radio news/talk listings.

I believe his show is also on NPR, but don't know if this segment is included. It is likely available as a podcast after the fact, but I haven't had the patience to navigate the CBC site to find the podcasts.

Key take-aways (I'm paraphrasing):
Apparently B&W is a novelty, with color being mainstream.
Filters and things like instagram allow photos to cut through the noise but are lipstick on a pig.
And Martin Parr takes loads of bad photos. And this helps him realize what a good photo actually is.

I thought the interviewer was pretty bad.

I think Gian is usually a good interviewer, but I agree with you that this was not a good interview overall. I think Gian knows music, and knows movies, but I got the sense he knows little about photography and little about Martin Parr other than what a producer or staff person gave him to read shortly before the interview.

I thought Parr's statement about his best work being behind him to be interesting, as well he ties that to being the case with most artists -- best work being done when they are young and hungry. But then again, what he may be saying is he needs to take a lot more bad pictures to get the few good ones these days. Or that he is no longer hungry enough to go out and take the bad ones to get the good ones. Or maybe he was trying to be provocative to make the interview interesting.

Unfortunately I missed his lecture at the Art Gallery of Ontario yesterday, but I have seen him speak in the past, and have read Parr by Parr. I'm not sure what I expected to get from the interview, but agree that it was really slight.

Edit: Segedi is more accurate than me; what Parr said he took lots of bad ones to realize what a good one is; which is different from the way I put it.
