I shoot with 6x6 and a 75mm lens (TLR). I do quite a bit of full body shots and typically, unless someone is extremely tall, I get 12 feet away from the subject and that allows me to get head to toe with a little bit of breathing room at the top and the bottom. I was wanting to get a 6x8 camera with an 80mm lens and shoot vertical with it, and I'm wondering if anyone can do the math and let me know how far away I would need to be to get the same head to toe with the same amount of breathing room at the top and the bottom. I'm assuming it would be about 9 feet, but I would love to hear from someone who can actually do the math and let me know with accuracy.

I am not in possession of the camera yet or else I would just set it up and measure.

Cheers!!!

There shouldn't be much of a difference, maybe a foot away at max.

Although there is a slight increase in focal length from 75 to 80, you have an increase in format too which should compensate for it.

If you had a 75mm lens in a 6x8, you could get closer: i.e. 12*(6/8) =9 ft.
As your lens would be an 80mm, then 9*(80/75)=9,6 ft. Plan for 10 ft.
Why not a 6x9, if you want to get closer?

You might look into using a 2 1/4 X 3 1/4 older press camera (e.g., Crown or Speed Graphic) for a bit more negative. Roll film backs are reasonably available from different manufactures.

It's not a TLR, but I'm not sure how you are modifying a TLR to give you 6x8 without changing gears, pressure plates, and more.

I use Barnack for these kind of things. Although you'll need to edit the database as the default medium format sizes are incorrect. According to Barnack, 6x6 (56 x 56 mm) and a 75 mm lens will give you an image frame 8.6 x 8.6 ft at 12 ft distance. With a 6x8 (56 x 76 mm) and a 80 mm lens, you'll need to be at 9.3 ft distance to get a 6.3 x 8.6 ft image frame.

I put your question almost verbatim to ChatGPT and it says 9.5 to 10 feet. For detail, give it a try yourself.

Here’s the prompt I used: I shoot with 6x6 and a 75mm lens (TLR).
