It was last May 7 of us took the Mega Bus to Philly, to hook up with three of our friends in Philly.
We talked of doing an over nighter to DC or Boston. Perhaps we could plan for a trip in June.
At the TED Talk Mid-Atlantic we stayed at a place that had POD's. This was small and modern and not too costly. Walking distance from the Amtrack.
A while back I stayed at the "Back Bay" neighborhood in Boston. The hotel rate was not too bad, the room more than add-D-quit, but the location was really great for really walking the city. To really walk Boston I say maybe stay overnight two days.
If we do Boston expect to do much-muy walking. I really covered this city walking once before using no mass transit.
I have some prints for Bob, and I have some I already printed of Mad-Rid. Some of my shot will make great panoramas, but these prints are full frame that need to be enlarged more with the expanse of sky cut out. Bob also looks great. We should exploit him as a model.
So a Sunday in May to Meet-Up at the Rockhard, Lexington and 97th, needs to be firmed up.

If you take a trip to Philly, consider visiting the Battleship New Jersey across the Delaware river in enemy territory, Camden. I work there and it is amazing. Also if you do it on a Sunday, you can do the Turret #2 tour which takes you to almost the bottom of the ship and you get to see every step of how the 16" 50cal guns were fired. You also get to walk down "Broadway" and peek your heads into engineering spaces. I'm currently scheduled for 3 of the 4 Sundays doing turret 2 tours. There is a deal where you get the turret then the firepower tour which shows the whole ship. Its a good deal as one of the tours is half price.

Phil,
Thanks for the heads up. What a historic ship. I remember when President Reagan recomision the New Jersey and three other Jersey class battleships. Popular science did a feature on the updates and upgrades. With cruse missiles the range was extended to 1.5K miles.
Also in Lebanon when a ceasefire was not respected there was an order to fire the 16 inch guns until the violators put up the white flag. Evidently no one likes being targeted by 16 inch guns.
Is it true that a salvo from nine 16 inch guns levels a square mile? I'm aware the addition of a sky ramp for jump jets (Harriers) removed one turret.

Apologies to Christian. Somehow a shot of his 4x5 Pro Homebrew was mistakenly shown as one of my Baby Linhof's. Due to Christian's obsessive tendencies and Linhof like build qualities his camera was mistaken for a Linhof by my editor. A correction is on going in process.
Unfortunately the text that matches and explains this remarkable camera is on the editing room floor.
TEASE: the next article is kind of a gear review with a twist. It kinda explains why someone who uses a Leica SL as their main rig would but a Leica CL. Some crazy great shots of "Bob" who I will promote as a great model will also be featured.
BTW in the Camera Chronicle feature all the shots were taken with a Leica SL using the 50 Lux-SL that is way oversized. This is a great lens.

The jump jet thing is false. The turrets are both too much of an asset as well as too large to be removed. There is just the aft helo deck.
We have Reagan's presidential flag and the commissioning pennant from the 1980s on display. The WWII pennant is also on display in the captain's in-port cabin.
I don't think a 9 gun broadside would level a square mile but it is certainly devastating. A full broadside also will not move the 58,000 ton ship sideways but it does create a breeze.
Also, I don't make any money off of selling a tour to a group, just for disclosure. In just proud to work there. Every day is a great opportunity and an honor.

Well, it should be a short review. The only reason to buy a CL if you have an SL is it is smaller. Crop factor can be a plus, smaller native lenses, etc.

Yes, but it is usually just a rationalization. Why not just buy a portrait lens instead of a CL and stick with the larger sensor of the SL?Crop factor can be a plus, smaller native lenses, etc.

Yes, but it is usually just a rationalization. Why not just buy a portrait lens instead of a CL and stick with the larger sensor of the SL?
I own a Noct-Nikkor, and the 58/1.2 becomes an 87/1.2 that creates a vast amount of shooting possibilities. The roll off of resolution in the rendering wide open in the corners gets cropped out and the sweet spot of a legendary lens made especially for night shooting and low coma gets fully exploited for its unique rendering.
A 75 Cron SL is only F2.0. My 50 Lux-R "E60" and 50 Lux-SL provide 75mm FOV plus F1.4. A 75 Cron-SL costs $4750.00 and pretty much still is a waiting list at a dealer.
The 50 Lux as a 75 on the CL with both lenses utilizes the lenses and adapters I already own. The trade off in sensor size is kinda made up in gaining a full F-stop. IMHO gaining a faster shutter speed might be the better asset if printing big.
Yes I could buy a 75 or 90 Cron-SL, but I didn't have to. Also I saved mucho money. BTW I'm saving for a 35 Cron-SL which is a more valuable lens for my work.
For practical reasons I'm also at a point where having a second camera with me is a good idea. I was in Spain for 3 1/2 days and I brought both cameras. It was useful having two rigged cameras with two different FOV's, no lens changing required.
Know on the first day in Madrid there was this horrible tree pollen bloom. Changing lenses was prohibited, and when I got back to NYC I had to wet clean the SL because of one speck that somehow infiltrated the weather sealed body.

Cal, welcome back, it was awfully quiet around here...
That picture is of a light weight 4x5, not a heavy baby. As you insisted I name it, and since it has parts from ‘Color-Kardan’ and ‘Technika’ cameras, I’m calling it a ‘Technicolor’ Linhof. It’s very versatile, but it doesn’t do b&w.
In May I’ll be out of town from the 13th until the 21st. I may be able to meet up in Boston on the 20th, but that is probably a stretch.

Christian,
In the past, my friends called me a drifter because I would disappear and reappear all the time. One time when I was in tenth grade I hitchhike to FLA with a friend for Spring Break. Only had $14.00 in my pocket, but I forgot to inform anyone.
When I returned home, boy was my dad pissed. LOL.
Maggie assures me that I was my dad's favorite out of 5 kids. Seems later in life I became aware that parents love the most the one kid that they should really hate. I was an evil kid. LOL.
Tonight I'll be heading to the Bowelry for an event called "Fluff." Maggie is on some panel.
Boston for me would likely be in June.
Leica just came out with a new firmware for my SL. Mostly includes the profile for the new 16-35 zoom, but I wonder if Leica responded to my upgrade/suggestion that maintains and prevents the recentering of the spot metering when using manual focus lenses. How cool would that be?

Last night there was a pop-up event in the Bowelry that featured "Maggie" and Lynn Yeager, a legendary writer who formally wrote for the Village Voice for 30 years, currently is an editor at Vogue, and is a guest writer for the New York Times.
The "House of Fluff" supports sustainable fashion and is anti-fur. A video crew documented the panel talk. I have seen Lynn Yeager around many fashion events, but this is the first time I have heard her speak. Very witty, funny and smart woman.
Interesting to note that Lynn Yeager does not do any social media. She said she avoids Social Media because she wants to get paid for her writing. This very much agrees with what Phil presents; that people should not work for free.
On the other hand Maggie has 490K followers...
So I kinda see both sides, but how do I negeciate these two extrems. I do kinda favor Phil's side and Lynn Yeager's approach because for over 4 decades I have been deeply involved in the arts, yet I remain just a guy with a pony tail (Maggie hates when I say that) who has maintained himself with a day-job. Realize I pursued initially being a painter, then a performer, and then a writer all the while being a photographer to some extent.
I see the downside of Social Media of how it invades one's life, the privacy issues, and the resulting lack of artistic solitude. Pretty much you play a crowd.
So today is another shoot and taping of video for another huge platform that could boost Maggie's numbers another 100K-300K. Maggie was told that at one-meg big things happen, and I believe the quadratic leaps mean that one-meg is likely before the end of this year. In September will be the fourth year anniversary of Maggie's blog.

Friday is a black tie Gala at the Plaza Hotel. In Mad-Rid I wore my tux as an evening suit with a purple Paul Smith tie. The black tie evolved into a cocktail hour, so I dialed down the formality. This Friday will be full blown formal, and the Paul Smith black tie that matches my lapels and is made of the same material is a standard tie instead of a bow-tie. No waistcoat or cumberbun either.

MFM,
Good advice. The word "Ambassador" was utilized by the hotel's PR person. This is "Maggie's" second trip as an Ambassador. I can see many more trips, and know that there is a chain of these Uber luxury hotels around the world.
The level of luxury I simply can't describe...
Interesting to note that Maggie recieved a few "Direct Messages" from her followers in Spain saying they saw her on the street walking around Madrid.
These followers mentioned they were too scared to approach and say hello. How polite and well mannered.
Meanwhile here in NYC I have had photo shoots on the the street interupted by followers and lost the good light. One time in Dover Market, a store that is set up like a collection of boutiques, this salesperson gushes, looses control, and regresses to the behavior of a five year old seeing Santa, screams like a little girl and does a selfie.
Then this guy catches himself and apologizes say he didn't mean to be rude. I found myself laughing at the situation.
So now I have to play my part as Maggie's entourage. LOL.

A while back I applied for an En Foco Fellowship. The application was soliciting "photojournalistic" work which really is not a good fit for my work. I consider myself more of an archivist or documentary photographer who concentrates on urban and specifically NYC. I was not surprised when I got a rejection. "Oh-well," I said.
So yesterday I got an invite to apply for one of En Foco's Professional Development Initiatives. Realize that En Foco is based in the Bronx, they foster people of color, and they have been around since 1974. 12 artists (meaning photographers) will meet for two Saturdays with a former Director of artHarlem who is a visual artist, photographer and curator. Also one-on-one "Doctor's hours" will be set up for each participant.
The area of focus is "organizational process" of storing prints, negatives and digital files.
Also project proposals and a $250.00 stipend will be given out for approved projects.
Pretty much this is getting help curating my work and help in getting my work out there. Having professional help from someone who curates shows, ran an organization, who has helped other artists get organized looks like a great opportunity.
So I got the invite yesterday, there are only 12 slots, and the deadline is tomorrow at 5:00 PM. The Meet-Ups are Saturday the 12th of May and the 19th.
Really helps to have an Artist Statement and Bio ready and handy. All I really had to submit were the above mentioned, contact information, and proposal for a project. In my case it is to make a bound book of 12x18 images printed on 17x22 sheet that has my file numbers, Lightroom settings, paper and inkset used, camera and lens used, subject tags, and other information that I think useful for the next step which is printing limited editions.
More or less this "Work-Book" is a depository of "Proofs" that contain important information for recreating and organizing my digital image capture work.
So it is really cool that En Foco remains actively engaged with me in providing opportunities. Hope I get selected for one of the 12 slots.
Tonight I have to get my tux ready for the black tie event at the Plaza Hotel. After work I have to run home and change. I wonder if I'll get invited to be photographed on the Red Carpet? Generally I get snubbed. LOL.
