Agreed. Sometimes Eric Kim's videos are actually semi-valuable as instructional tools, sometimes rhey are just for fun.

This video is the latter, IMHO.

No reason to let it give you heartburn.😉

I'm sure this is exactly what Kai wants to hear, but I look at DRTV as the photo version of Top Gear. The information isn't always super important, and they are more about the production value than displaying the pros and cons. But that's why I like it. It's entertainment. I can go anywhere to read about about sharpness or contrast, or how much the lens weighs. But to spend 10 minutes of my time chuckling while I watch their videos sounds pretty good to me.

I enjoy Kai's work on DigitalRev as its a nice break from the hand wringing photography chatter we often see on this and other forums. They have fun with it and throw in a little factual info to keep it interesting.

I have followed Eric for a bit and, more then anything, enjoy his obvious enthusiasm for what he's doing. His style is his style but it's clear he loves being out on the street making images. He also is willing to explore new avenues, like film and flash recently, which seems to make his work an evolving work in progress. All in all, interesting guy.

It's funny how so many say what you shouldn't be doing in the streets instead of just doing what comes naturally while photographing in the streets. There are no rules. If it isn't street, who cares? It's just like those who think still life in the streets isn't street photography since it doesn't involve people; nonsense really. The definition of "street photography" is getting stupider and stupider by the week.

Two young guys make a video of them having fun shooting FILM Leicas on the streets of Hong Kong, and they upload the video to YouTube where everyone can see it. Hmmmm, might just get more young'uns interested in shooting film. More film users. More film sold. Film continues to be manufactured. I get to keep shooting film. It's all good.

A lot of great photographers staged their street or documentary photographs: especially Doisneau and Eugene Smith come to mind, just to mention two.

That's a great video showing two guys enjoying photography their own way, interacting with people in a pretty direct but never offensive way and obviously getting a positive response from most of their subject, be it a smile or the pose they were asked for. Ok, they're playing a bit stupid or funny, but I call that not taking themselves too seriously.

Besides it is indeed a social experiment, as they call it. I wonder if people in Hong Kong are on average as friendly as it seems here, or these people in the clip are so friendly because the photographers they're meeting have specially good social skills.

This isn't like a war correspondent showing bloody images of civilians being trapped between firing sides or starving emaciated children in some third world country. It's a couple guys having fun, discussing the differences between their film cameras and at one point dressing up in costume and interacting with the people they shoot.

The level of negative attention this has earned totally mystifies me. If you don't like Kai or Eric or both.. fine, don't watch them. If you don't like their method of shooting street [or street portraits].. then don't employ it. Each person has their own moral compass.

Some of the rants though, particularly on that youtube page.. are really over the top. Look at school shootings and hate crimes etc.. be upset about that. What does it matter that EK made someone pose for him rather than catching it 'naturally' from across the street. Compared to all the rest it's kind of petty and unimportant.

Yep. Some say the streets are just theaters. Everybody is already acting a certain way. Rearranging the shots doesn't make the scenes any less real.

Maybe you were in a mood when you posted or just don't like something that was done.. that really is okay, don't kick yourself. Even Eric would rather people share their true opinons, whether he agrees or not. I've let him have it before 😀. He really is a genuinely nice guy.
