Just wanted to get some opinions on taking a medium format camera with me to New Zealand when I go in November. I'll be hiking a lot, but only day hikes. I'll be bringing my Nikon FM3a with me, and probably a compact digital (no "smart" phone, as I don't have one).

Is the Rollei (or Yashica) worth the extra weight?

Thanks,
JP

I live in NZ and am always most satisfied with my Rolleiflex photos for most situations: street, landscape, portrait... I think you should bring it. Enjoy your trip!

100% worth it. Medium format film does the light and landscapes here justice. I don't feel that digital media does.

Not a lot of extra weight with a TLR. Some of those landscapes will be wonderful. Now you've asked the question you may regret not taking it. I find it hard holding my TLR very still. A CF monopod is very light and makes a big difference..... I use one a lot with a Hasselblad.

Yes - it appears that you are correct!

OK, I'm convinced - I'll take one of them (probably the Rollei) and lots of film.

Thanks, people - I'm really looking forward to going!

Not a Kiwi, but in my opinion: 6x6 for the North Island, 6x17 for the South Island
