Medium Format scan with Epson V700

I've just purchased a V700 to scan MF negatives. I'm including three scans, one of the original and two 100% crops. Should I be getting this kind of detail or better from my scans? I was hoping for a bit sharper detail (though I didn't sharpen the crop in this case). I tried adjusting the feet on the film holder and it didn't seem to make too much of a difference. Am I expecting too much? Just want to get the most out of this scanner. Used Silverfast SE @ 3200dpi.

hmm, seems a tad unsharp to me. then again, I've never scanned MF negs, and it's the print that counts.. so.. :)
 
It does seem soft. I think you should be getting better scans. At least I've seen sample scans from the V700 that looked sharper. I forget what the V700 uses (I researched this scanner several months ago). Are you using a glass carrier, or are you using an after-market/third-party carrier?

You should get a better scan, but not by much. First, you have to make sure your negative is absolutely flat, second, you can try to shim your holder using e.g. visiting cards, and repeat your scans ( use just a small portion of the picture), till you start getting some difference - it could be that you have to LOWER your holder - in that case you have to get Doug's one, which I recommend anyway. Also, try to scan at 6400 dpi , sharpen 200,2 and then reduce to 3200 dpi and work from there. A high res flatbed scan has to be sharpened substantially to recover the softness induced by the machine.
 
Thank you for all the suggestions. I think I'll get one of Doug's film holders. somei'm sure there will be improvement. I also scanned the same image through a Minolta Multi Scan Pro and while there was some improvement, it wasn't by much. I also need to mention that the film that I used was Kodak 100uc, not the Fuji as noted in the first post.
 
Way, if you are getting Doug's holder, order at least 10 t locks, and a couple of glass inserts as well.

I have the same scanner (V700), scan MF as well as 135 with it and use Doug's ANR insets for 135mm. Your scan looks a tad unsharp to me. Be sure that you use the correct setting for this scanner ... It has two lenses, focussing on different heights. If you use any film-holder be sure to select "film with filmholder" and NOT "film with area guide". Otherwise you scan with the wrong lens. It happend more than once to me ... :eek:

Thanks Maddoc. I do have "film with filmholder" selected when using Epson Scan. Do you have a scan with a 100% that you could show me for comparison?
 
I have several scans of my photos taken with the 500 C/M and Rolleiflex 3.5 E (Planar) but did not bring my external HD to work today. These files are huge ! (~55 MB as I remember) I could mail you a scanned photo (slide ? BW ? ) in 100 % this evening. If this OK for you, please PM me your mail address.
