I try to keep track of my friends. The first four are the members of the band I play the trumpet in, babils.
Number five is a dear old friend.

Agreed! I sometimes get caught up in photographing for my portfolio that I forget about my friends. Funny enough, one of my favorites is of the latter:

Dave--Since you say you're going anyway, maybe it won't spoil it too much to tell you that the boulder has been moved. However, I too was there when it was there a few years ago. I spent my honeymoon in Gatlinburg and we have loved the mountains ever since. Gatlinburg finally got so big and crowded we started staying in Townsend. Our other two favorite places are Highlands and Blue Ridge. Next time we go to Highlands I'm going to get off US64 at the bottom of the mountain near Franklin and take NC1672, 1678, and 1620 for a change of scenery. And then there was the time I had to drive from Highlands to Townsend without my contact lenses, but that's another story.

Yes, both the people and the places of our memories can be missed. I sometimes feel I am homesick for a place - places - that no longer exist. And on occasion I like to imagine the houses I used to live in still hold the people I once lived with there - all of us at the age we were then.

This thread is a good reminder Dave. I am guilty of not photographing my friends often enough. Sometimes it seems an intrusion on the moment, but afterwards, one never regrets having the memory in a photograph.
A close friend I haven't seen for a while. Her son, in this picture, died a year ago, aged 17. She now treasures this picture.

A dear friend of mine with her granddaughter. We have known each other for over 40 years.

Those friend portraits are lively and technically excellent, Lukitas. They look like they were shot on a Monochrom. They have that special extended tonal look.

Another one in that spirit, Lynn. My daughter is home for the weekend and all her friends gathered for brunch, some now with their own kids. Seems like only yesterday that she herself was this size.

This is a special thread , thanks for starting it.
Yes, times flies and we realize it only later, too late in many cases. Most of my friends photos are on film and not available now. I should scan. But I would like to post this picture of me and my friend Francesco (on the right side): we met through photography but became close friends independent from photography. We shared good and bad moments. This photo was taken in his place a few years ago
And this is the last photo I took of him, after visiting the Camera Work exhibition in Milan. Francesco died for an heart attack a few weeks later, he was 46. I miss him.

Sad to say this has happened to me more than once.Friends are number one, but things are important, too. I've posted about this before, but I'm going to do it again. If any of you are psychic, you can stop reading now because you already know what I'm going to say. For the rest of you, here it is again. One day I was driving down a road beside a large field with a barn in the middle of it. The setting sun could be seen by looking down the hallway of the barn. I had no camera with me. Next time I drove down the road, the barn was completely GONE! A much more spectacular example is the Old Man of the Mountain whose image is on the New Hampshire quarter dollar coin. It's gone forever, too. So take "that" picture now, or as soon as you reasonably can.

Clay, it is I who thank you as the inspiration to photograph friends and loved ones is increased by the photos of all who have posted above. Actually the fact that you are working on a project kicks me in the posterior to get me focused on my own project.
These are great photos and tell powerful stories! Thanks everyone!

I have heard that the Indians said that when the earth was young, a fisure formed in its surface with all the animals on one side and Man on the other. The fisure began to widen into an uncrossable casm until at the last moment Dog jumped the gap!
Whenever I think of think of this, it effects me emotionally. I think most any dog lover will understand.

There is a dog photographer who was featured in LFI magazine a couple of years ago. I forget his name. He was quoted as saying that dogs are the only animals that do not exist without humans. True or not I have no idea.
But is it any wonder dogs are our friends? I love dog portraits!

Yes, some of our best friends do not own property, wear clothes, have middle or last names, speak English or another language with an extensive vocabulary and syntax. But here they are with us, despite our shortcomings....
