and my reply to bob was...

i have been watching that thread since he posted the dylan lyrics.
i hesitate to lock it just yet.
we seem to mostly be able to 'rise above' most things that would cause small wars on other forums and i believe it is partly due to exercising our discipline & discretion rather than heavy handed moderation.
but i will lock it if starts to get ugly.

A few words by Billy Joe Shaver:

On a rainy Monday mornin',
That's the day that I was born,
in that ol' share croppin', one room country shack.
They say my Mammy left me,
the day before she had me,
Said she hit the road and never once looked back.

Well, and I just thought I'd mention,
My Grandma's old age pension,
Is the reason why I'm standin' here today.
I got all my country learnin',
Milkin' and a churnin',
Pickin' cotton, raisin' hell, and bailin' hay.

And what does this have to do with Memorial Day? About as much as Dylan's protest music. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices made.

The New Air and Space Museum near Dulles. These planes are restored to flying condition. I doubt they will be flying again. Saw more Vets there than you see anywhere else other than a reunion.

My Father flew B29's. I am VERY proud of that.

I am pointing to another members gallery to bring home a point about memorial day-

canonetc has a series of images that demonstrate how much it means to so many people and not just Americans and not only the Americans that so many assume they now...

I realize these are part of a Victory in Europe day celebration, they are all veterans commemorating a great point in history, they also honor the men and women who gave their lives which is what Memorial day is about.

.. I wasn't only alive when Dylan wrote these lyrics, I saw him perform these lyrics. And as for different times, I think these lyrics are timeless and apply especially now ... Read them over twice or thrice ...
And as for memorial day, I respect anybody celebrating this day although I personally think it's rather macabre to celebrate these kind of events, for what ever reason one celebrates them.

Just think why wars, minor or major are fought ????

Think twice about the reason why still today in this so called "modern" society men are still losing their lives ... and that whe must think of these sacrefices, I agree, but certainly not celebrate the fact .... People are psychologically brainwashed into patriotism and this up to an extent that they don't reason the actual "reasons" of these actions anymore .... such as is happening while I write this response.

Jan,
We do not "celebrate" this day; it is a day set aside to honor, remember, and express our gratitude to those who gave their life in the service of their country -- regardless of the politics of war. It is a somber and respectful observance.

You know, my dad died of illnesses brought on by smoking too much. However, if one mourner at his funeral had been so crass as to mention it on the day we buried him, I'd have knocked that person into next week. That was not the time or the place to discuss such things. "Hey, sorry you're dad's dead. He did it to himself, you know."

We Americans have a peculiar habit of honoring our war dead without spending much time discussing the root causes of war - we leave that for another day. Memorial day is, for us, a simple day of remembrance. Regardless of the righteousness of the cause - these men and women answered a call, served, and paid the ultimate price for it. We can discuss the futility of war another day.

Why show up at a grave and insult the honored dead? Go somewhere else and do that. You say you respect us - then let us mourn in our own way, and keep your psychological claptrap to yourself. Your failure to understand our need to honor our war dead is your problem, not ours. But insulting our war dead is a problem I'd as soon not deal with here.

Semper Fidelis,

Sgt William B. Mattocks, USMC 1979-1985

Lets see ... Dylan's "Masters of War" was first published in 1963. Your public profile states you were born June 6, 1965.

Given that small bit of information I am disinclined to believe you are well informed.

Go out, take some photos on a topic that demonstrates how you feel about life and post them. Use your images as a soap box. Stop stepping on others toes please.

yes, g'man, some photos of how others honour their dead brings us full circle.

in these days of heightened sensitivities, political correctness, the anonymity and relative 'safety' of the internet we find more people more than willing to share their ideas and philosophies.
this is a good thing here if it concerns rf cams and photography in general but i for one do not come here for my diet of varied political views.
