Writing out 'Christmas' thousands of times by hand on scarce, expensive parchment would have indeed been a waste, especially during a time when the abbreviation was understood.
But our era is a different one.
I guess it really doesn't matter, only that it's part of the whole degeneration of what is personally important for many people.

Happy holidays to all of you, and a warm Merry Christmas!
It'll be a time for me to take a big, well deserved break from work, and to be with my family, parents and sisters, that I see only twice a year. A time to be with my loved ones, especially my father who had a heart attack two months ago and that is now finally well recovering from all of this. Phew!

I'm going way off-topic here, but perhaps one could at least say that, in the context of this sort of discussion forum (or email, usenet, internet forums in general), abbreviations are extremely common, and almost any word is fair game for abbreviation 🙂 As such, online it's just as likely to be a simple abbreviation as anything else.
In any case, some people are offended by it, some are not (but that's true of most things). I for one would rather see "merry xmas" than "happy holidays" as, abbreviation or not, at least it refers to something specific.

Ahh...Christmas...think of all the good "Christian" traditions in our modern celebration...fat elves climbing down chimneys, beating people up over the last Tickle-me-Elmo at the mall, hanging sticks of peppermint on a tree, singing outside in the snow while people give us nasty pudding that isn't fit for my dog, eating ham while drinking whiskey-laced egg nog, watching bad movies at the theatre, and celebrating around the time of the Winter Solstice... Can anyone say "Cultural Diffusion"?
