Merry Christmas, You're Under Arrest

A bit off topic but BobFrance, where is that camera store in your photo? It looks nice!

Hans, it's a fantastic shop with a great owner. You can part exchange, chat, haggle and sometimes even get a free biscuit out of them. They always have a good stock of Rfs as well as everything else you can think of.

It's called "The Real Camera Company" and it's in Manchester UK.
They have a small website here. www.realcamera.co.uk and an ebay shop here:

If you're ever in Manchester do call in it's a great shop.

We were instructed that we could take pictures of anywhere on the ground floor, but not take pictures of the ground floor from the first floor balcony. Madness! I suspect it being something to do with the arcade being a thoroughfare on the ground floor, so a public area.

Bob, I bet if you were to ask, the reason (sorry, excuse) might be more to do with Health & Safety. No one want's to be 'brained' by a falling Leica. ;)

Back to the OP: The photographer had the situation under control until he (sarcasticly) pointed the camera at the cop at which point the cop put his hand up to block the camera. A stupid thing to do in a stupid situation.
Just because we think we are right is no reason to push.

It really makes me afraid to be a photographer.

And it's going to bite Western culture in the ass if it gets much worse. 50-100 years from now people are going to be wondering why there's no iconic images of people being people like we had in the 1900's... there's going to be vast swathes of time and culture that simply don't get recorded properly. Oh.. there will be a ton of crappy flash blown pictures from P&S's... but the HCB type artistic images will just not exist because they kicked photographers out of parks, malls, buildings, beaches and pretty much everywhere else people are.

we can't photograph here?

What really kills me is that these same parents that bitch about someone taking a pic of their kid in the mall... will go home and post pics of their kids running through a sprinkler in bathing suits in the back yard on Flickr and Facebook. OK.. maybe they'll tag the photo's "friends and family" only... but statistics show that if your kid is molested s/he's it's MANY times more likely that it was a friend or relative who did it.

It just goes to show a person might be smart... but people are stupid, don't have a lick of common sense anymore and it's only getting worse.

Absolutely. Note that the charges brought against this guy in Charleston have nothing to do with photography.

One might, if one were paranoid, suspect that the charges issued stemmed from the fact that the actual acts in question were not crimes. It was once termed 'felony contempt of cop' and any charges filed were 'catch-all' sorts that could be applied to just about anyone. If a cop takes you by the shoulder and says "You're coming with me, son," and you squirm and say "What?" You have just 'resisted arrest."

In reading the article, it appears that the photographer escalated the situation:

"Do you mind if I take a picture of you?"

Rensberger said he reached in his pocket and pulled out his camera and raised it to take a picture of the police officer.

Why the hell {pardon} is this necessary? It's asking for a confrontation! :(

Well, I`m pleased that it`s only myself and Noel out on Sat. You are all clearly in a rebellious mood :) . I`ll give you a call if we need bailing out .

You know what irks me? Freaking cops younger than my kids. How the Hell can I obey orders given by an idiot Boy Scout?

I probably would have shot a photo of the cop too, it would just be so absurd. He did the right thing by publicizing it.

But the thing is, he -- and I -- are still stupid for doing that on a practical, real-world level. Even if you win against the cop and he gets reprimanded, you'll then have a professional goon with your name and number... and revenge is best served cold. I can see it very likely to have a rude surprise a year or two down the road.

In Italy is more and more frequent that at entrance of mall there is a sign which very clear forbid to take photo and films.
Shops owner are only interested in making there own business. All photographers (amateur or pro) should avoid to buy anything in these kind of places.
robert
PS I know it woill not make any difference, but shops owner are make own interest and photogtaphers try to make the photographer's interest

The only mall I've ever taken photographs freely is in the Mall of America in Minnesota. Everywhere else I've been told to shove it by mall security.
