What kind of metering does the Canonet G-III QL 17 use? Spot? Center? Sometime else? Where in a scene is the camera metering off of?

In a few days I'll have this camera, my first foray with a rangefinder so I'm a little excited. However, I haven't found info about how to meter with it. I figure that it isn't something like a spot meter given the parallax issue. Thanks.

The meter pretty much factors in everything you can see in the viewfinder, with a little less emphasis on what you see in the top of the viewfinder. You can see the meter cell on the 12 o'clock position on the front of the lens.

If you have a filter on the lens, the meter will account for the filter factor, since it reads through the lens. The filter somewhat blocks the light coming from the top of the scene(when held in the landscape format), so further emphasis is placed on the lower part of the scene.

The meter is very accurate from my experience, even when using dark red or stacked filters. I think you will really enjoy your GIII.

the only time I've found the meter to be fooled is when there is a strong backlight.. so you need to set the metering by pushing the shutter release halfway down when metering off a neutral gray, then recompose and shoot

enjoy the Canon.. I'll never give up mine

So what you and R Alan are saying is that as long as the overall view averages out to something close to a neutral gray, it should be fine?

Thanks a lot!
