MF differences between EP-1 and G-1 ?

Hi All,

Is there much difference between the EP-1 and G-1 in terms of manual focussing?

I'm keen to get one of these cameras and possibly a 40mm f2 Summicron-C. I've read that the EP-1 requires an extra button press to close the magnified view which seems not so great - is this the case for the G-1 too?

The G1 is easier, the EP1 has more button presses (cycling through several options to get to MF) but can be configured to reduce the number of presses. The EP1 also requires the extra press to get back to standard view.

I'm really tempted by the G-1, which is a surprise to me since I'm coming from a D300 and have always highly prized build quality so you would think the EP-1 would be a no brain winner for me.

However, I remember really enjoying the Canon G5 as my first digicam, and the Panny G-1 has that all important swivel screen that I used a lot with the G5 to get all manner of interesting angles, from macro to ground-level. And that slow shutter simulation mode sounds fantastic - I can imagine using that quite a bit.

So, has anyone tried the Leica 40 with the G-1 yet? Seems a perfect portrait combo(?)

I recently acquired a copy of the Rokkor version of the same lens. I haven't had it long enough to do some portraits, but it's lovely to work with as a general walkaround lens. It's nice and small, too.

You don't need to press any buttons, or set the menu to anything other than whatever focus mode is being used, on either camera to focus manually, just turn the focus ring until the image is sharp either on the LCD or EVF of the G1 and shoot. Or f the lens is an Olympus or Panasonic AF 4/3 lens the G1 will ask you to change to MF when it is mounted.

But to magnify the focus area when using a dedicated MF lens you need one more button press on the E-P1, and that button press is to get back to the main view with the 'OK' button, not the half press of the shutter button like the G1. The problem with that is it is almost bound to move the camera as you negoitiate your thumb, so not great for critical focus. I'm sure Olympus could change this to the shutter release with a firmware change.

Thanks for the compliments. I always shoot RAW, so the images always have colour information. The B&W conversions were done in Photoshop (actually, PS Elements -- PS's baby brother). Sometimes I convert using PSE 6's own built-in converter, sometimes I use a hue/saturation trick I learned years ago, and sometimes I use a plug in filter called BW Styler. For the car shots I used BW Styler as a base, then worked the images a bit more in PSE.

I dont know about G1, but the zoom focus on E-P1 is quite troublesome. I hope the firmware update will fix this.

The biggest difference is the G1 is easier to focus without using the MF Assist zoom-in function. Once zoomed in, the two are similar in use. This is due to the higher resolution of the G1's LCD and EVF.

Also consider the fact that the G1 allows you to see the LCD (and thus focus) from many different angles, the fixed LCD on the E-P1 can be quite limiting for any shooting where you might want to hold the camera somewhere other than right in front of your face. The G1 excels at low-angle photography and its LCD can be used as a waistlevel.

John, I just found this posts and had the chance to truely enjoy your pictures taken with the Rokkor. Those are fantastic. thank you for sharing your techniques of processing your raw data. It works. The Rokkor lens IS in the right hands!
