The AF construction is so crap that it only hits focus at f1.4 at close distances something like 30% of the time - there's too much play in the focus motor to get it any more accurate.

While I'll be the first to call the AF not great, mine is nowhere as bad as that (serial 75480640). The logarithmic angular arrangement of focusing distances makes it seem unlikely that slop in the mechanism would manifest itself more pronouncedly at close distances. Maybe something else is wrong with your lens?

Definitely possible - I do envy the size of it in comparison to my sigma (which is quite large)
