I'd love a full frame digital with that spot metering system the OM-3 I got off maitani has on board ... not to mention the huge optical viewfinder.

We have to face the facts though ... it's as unlikely as snow at Ayer's Rock! (sigh) 😛

Someone will eventually wake up at Olympus.

Actually, if I *were* Olympus, I'd skip past 35mm and go beyond.
 
Keith, Gavin is right about getting the best and fastest lenses made for m4/3.

I shoot the Panny GF-1 and just acquired the GX-1. I currently own only one zoom- the Panasonic 45-200. I bought it just to have something on the long end and it is rare when I use it. Other than that- I shoot with three prime lenses, much like I did back in my film rangefinder days- I have the Panny 14mm 2.8, the Panny 20mm 1.7, and the Olympus 45mm 1.8. All three of those lenses are outstanding, especially the 20 and the 45.

FWIW, it will presumably be gone even faster - and so will most competing EVIL mount standards. Going by the fate of four-thirds (and just about every camera mount past the dawn of AF), and given that every marketing student learns that forced expiration must happen before competition from the own used products strikes, it will probably be supplanted by something only half compatible within five years.

I don't know what you said.... but I didn't like the way it sounded, so I am betting you are totally wrong on this post!!
 
Once you discover that there's not a helluva lot of difference in cameras and that you can make good pictures with any of them with a little familiarization, you can settle into doing photography and stop fretting the small stuff. I've reached the point that I start to get the proverbial thousand yard stare when people bring up comparisons of image quality between various camera formats and start waxing eloquent over how much better the quality is with the larger sensors. They are all capable of good image quality. The m4/3 is just another format that is highly capable. I've been more than pleased with many pictures I've made with a Canon G10 and Lumix LX5 and their relatively tiny sensors so I never hesitated to buy an E-P1 and a G1 when they were introduced. I've never found the somewhat smaller format to be a limitation.

If I show someone one of my pictures and the only good things they can say about it is how sharp it is and how much detail is in it, I consider that picture a failure.
 
So, to summarize ... m4/3 isn't going away, you can make good photos with just about any camera, everyone has a camera they just can't bond with (or manufacturer that finally pizzes them off,) Olympus will probably never make a 35mm-sized sensor camera (but if they decide to they should go bigger or get yet another new board of directors,) most of us like fast primes instead of clunky zooms, pixel-peeping is so 90s-200x ... use what works.

Have I missed anything?
 
I was forced to sell my M9 kit for financial reasons, and now use an m4/3 system (GF1 and GX1). Before that I had 5D and 5DII systems.

I feel pretty good about this approach and don't miss the M9. For street, I really appreciate the deeper DOF for zone focusing, and have also grown to value AF and even face recognition. On the GX1, in particular, focus is remarkably quick. I can shoot very free and loose and fast with good results, even with AF.

Before parting with the M9, I did some print test comparisons. For 12 x 16" B&W prints I could not see any difference, nor could others I showed them to (M9 + 40 Summicron and GX1 + 20mm 1.7).

I definitely prefer the form factor of the GF1 and GX1 over the mini-SLR designs. So I'm not tempted by the OM-D. For street I think it would be hard to beat any of them with a 14mm or 17mm lens, with OVF or EVF.

As far as m4/3 longevity, who knows?

I recently upgraded my G1 to an Olympus EP2. While I love the camera, I still think it's a suffer of using my leica glasses with an adapter on it. I'd better stick with the lovely RD1.

Olympus seems married to both the 4/3-Micro 4/3 sensor (which are the same-only the mounts differ) and mirrorless. I don't expect them to do any other sensor for a long time. They can live quite well off the income stream from the micro lines. I would not be surprised, and rather expect them to never do another mirrored DSLR.

The real economic question is this. Why would a company that is so creative, and innovative choose to devolve their product line when they are having so much success going in these new directions. Anything other than what they are doing would be counterproductive.

Screw what the market wants... They are pioneering and creating new markets. All the other mirrorless offerings fall short of the lead that Olympus/Panasonic have in the EVIL market place.

I have been shooting OLY 4/3 since the Evolt E-300 and have been happy with the evolution. My new lust list has the OM-d EM-5 with the grip at the top. Number 2 on that list is Jessica Alba...

If I hadn't been addicted to the TV show Dark Angel, in which she was the lead role (post apocalyptic Seattle USA, and her part of a secret superhuman government experiment), I would've had to google her as well, rather than Ogle her on the internet.
 
I do worry a little about the fact that there aren't that many players involved in M43 and Olympus's involvement with it seems fairly committed. If it did disappear down a mineshaft they may follow it ... I realise I shouldn't be having thoughts like this! 😀

Just be glad that you're not a proponent of the Samsung NX line then.

I believe that once some of those NEX users get over the APS-C "bigger-must-be-better" mentality, they will also see the light and switch to m4/3rd. I've seen some chatter to this effect already.

m4/3rd is here to stay.
Even if not, I'll wait for the next innovation from Olympus.
