I just finished this morning reading "Playing the Changes: Milt Hinton’s Life in Stories and Photographs" by Milt Hinton, David G. Berger & Holly Maxson (Vanderbilt University) and besides his marvelous stories as he tells the story of his life, the book has hundreds of photographs, either from his family collection, or in the most part taken by the late bass legend. The book updates his "The Bass Line" and includes several pages where he discusses his photography, how Keg Johnson convinced him to get a Leica (his first camera was an Argus) and later purchasing a Canon (I believe one with a trigger). Hinton eventually switched to a Nikon SLR. He states he found the pictures he took with his Leica sharper than those with the Canon btw. His comments here as his comments on breaking the color barrier for studio musicians are instructive and interesting.

Just a wonderful book and also includes a cd of his recollections on his life. The book is a large coffee table book, so its not a paperback bio that one can read while taking a train commuting to work.

If someone previously posted about this book I apologize.

I'm very anxious to check this book out. I saw an exhibit of his work a number of years ago at the Bucks County Community College outside of Philadelphia and it was incredible. Especially some of the photos of the young Miles Davis.

Thanks for the post.
