ok what do you guys think of this new setting in the next Firmware Update?

Min Shutter Speed Setting in Aperture Priority

in Aperture Priority Mode, have a setting available so that you can set the slowest shutterspeed that the camera will go to, instead of it going all the way to 30 sec.

i do alot of available light shooting, and sometimes i'm in situations where i go from enough light to barely any light back to enough light, and i'm in on-the-fly quick pictures mode where i only have a split moment to take the picture, and i want my camera in Aperture Priority mode, so i can just set focus, press shutter, and be on my way,

BUT

it would be cool if i can be in Aperture Priority, and no matter how dark it gets, since i'm only comfortable shooting down to, say, 1/4 sec handheld, i can set the camera so that it won't go below 1/4 of a sec for any shot even if exposure goes to minus.

i think it would be a nice option. what do you guys think?

LEICA?? is this possible in a firmware update?? :D

That would only make sense to me if the ISO sensitivity was (automatically) wound up to try to try to achieve "correct" exposure (perhaps allowing settings of a minimum shutter speed and a maximum ISO value). The idea seems sort of like the "camera shake" threshold in [P] mode on the Konica Hexar, except that relied on electronic control of the aperture, which the M8 doesn't have. It can control sensitivity, though...

I like the idea! I lost a picture of a tunnel exit on a train ride recently becuase I foolishly tried to take a shot of the inside of the tunnel, and the camera was doing noise reduction as the exit faded from view.

We can keep going adding extra menus and things but the M has always been about simplicity. Its not an inherently bad idea but the more add ons the more potential for error. You can be sure that the one time you dont want it to hold the shutter speed, you will have forgotton it was on and can loose a shot all the same. I just go mannual a lot more than I used to (remeber Leica MP / M6). Its good not to loose the habit.
Best wishes

i understand more is sometimes less, but seriously, when do you ever go to 1 second or more when you are handholding your camera?? my limit for shutter speed comfort handheld is 1/4 sec. i think it would be nice to be able to set that.

leica come on!! you'll be the first EVER to have this as a setting on a camera!!!

Hi I think you are pretty good to hand hold at 1/4 actually! I agree in principle its a nice failsafe, its just that you may forget and have the thing on a pod taking this sunset and take a while to figure out whats wrong. The only reason i mention manual is i used an M6 last weekend and shot about 5 rolls of film. The M8 was my first venture into digital and im beginning to think that apperture priority combined with digital is making me lazy. It was a good exercise to go back and the result is im actually using the M8 on mannual a lot more in tricky light.

Best wishes

My Nikon D80 has this. Minimum shutter speed, with maximum ISO on Auto ISO/Aperture priority. The D80 would increase ISO up to max ISO (settable) if it will shoot below the min shutter speed.

Absolutely No! Use Manual exposure for this type of shooting. Next thing you know we'll want Program Mode on the M - more mindless shooting.

If they add a feature like that they might as well go all the way and add autofocus, in camera multiple expsoures, auto bracketing, high speed crop, etc.

So all the shots that you missed because the exposure was too long will continue to be missed because the exposure is now too short.

Is this a feature in any other cameras that you know of? I mean, an Aperture Priority-except-when-I-want-Shutter-Priority-but-keep-my-Aperture-Priority-because-I'm-too-lazy-to-use-the-Manual-Mode Mode?

"Min Shutter Speed Option" would, it think fit better in our 2.5 inch screen ;)

If the meter's telling you it needs 3secs, then it really needs 3secs. Why then would you want to shoot it at a say 1/15 minimum preset?

I think it is a good idea.
if only because it prevents ultra long exposure times (30 sec) in a dark situation
(or if one would leave the lens cap on.....) wich in turn prevents a correct picture to be taken quickly.

Mad_boy (Who ones left the lens cap on)

Perhaps there is an opportunity for Leica "Firmware a la carte" for a nice fee. I am quite happy as things are. The only firmware update i would really like would be the lens identification as a selectable menu. For me, apperture priority is pretty racey!

The Canon 1D Mark III does this. But you need Auto ISO (limits also settable) for this to work.

If you're silly enough to press the shutter when the camera is indicating a multi-second exposure and you're hand holding a photograph turn the camera off and it doesn't record the image
