I recently bought a used Minolta Dimage Scan Multi largely because I wanted the ability to scan medium format from time to time in addition to 35mm negatives. Besides the fact that it is a bit slow, it does the job reliably. The Minolta software feels a bit clunky, so I downloaded a trial copy of Vuescan and that was an improvement.

One downside of scanning is that my scans show quite a bit of dust, even though they are fresh from the minilab. My question: is there any way to remove them via software without compromising image quality? If anyone has tips to share on preparing 35mm or 6x6 negatives before scanning, I'd appreciate it!

I give my negs a quick wipe with a lint free soft cloth and then a good going over with a Giotto Rocket Blower. A few minutes spent cleaning the dust off before scanning saves a lot of post-processing IME.

Two things in this life are unavoidable, dust and taxes, in both cases best thing is to keep them both to a absolute minimum, get everything a clean and free from static at the outset then try and keep like that, any software solution will degrade the image; not a problem if you’re printing at 6x4 at 24x16 then clone-stamp and a patient nature is probably better

iml, Sparrow: I guess there are no simple workarounds to dust. Thank you both for your quick responses and helpful suggestions.
