Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro

Would it make sense to look for a Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro now in 2019? Is it possible to source bulbs for this scanner? How is the build quality compared to the Nikon Coolscan 8000/9000?

I am grateful for any advice about this scanner!

I got mine used about 5 years ago. It has been working flawlessly ever since, and i have done thousends of scans since then, Picture quality is top notch. I use Vuescan software, which will run on any windows 10 PC, allthough you will need at least a firewireport to connect it to. There is a Yahoo group dedicated to this scanner, and they state that you still can get fresh bulbs on the internet.
Alass, if anything else goes wrong, i believe that you are in serius trouble, as there are no spare parts or people to fix theese wonderful machines.
If you find one that is working, you must ask yourself the question, "Do i feel lucky today?"

I am currently looking at different new (for me) options for scanning medium format film, and being very satisfied with my Minolta 35mm scanners, I started thinking about the Multi Pro as an option. I will keep in mind the things you mention.

About 15 or so years ago, I researched the Multi Pro and Nikon 8000 when both were available new. I chose and bought the Multi Pro. It has been running fine ever since.

Someday it will have a problem and become unrepairable. Same for my body. No clue which will happen first. So I just use both without worry.

Been running mine for a good few years now with no problems.
I do treat it with kid gloves though.


Most people (myself included) run them using the Vuescan software. The only other alternative is running the original software on a much older PC/Mac.
I like vuescan, it is a bit technical, but very powerful/controllable. I also appreciate the fact it will run practically any scanner, so even if I change scanners I shan't have to get used to different software.

Mine has been running trouble-free for many years. I use the SilverFast AI software, however, on a PowerPC G5 Mac running OS X 10.5.8. If you do find one, make sure it includes the several film and slide carriers, and also the transport screw that locks down the innards for shipping. Good luck in your search!
