Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro

I have this thing, I'm using it. The scans are sharp and nice. . .

but, it apparently only scans color at 16bit . . . is this a problem if I want good color depth?, and it is LOUD. It kind of vibrates a little . . . is this normal? By vibrate, I mean it makes a sort of vibratory sound like a little stepper motor instead of the customary hum of most other scanners I've used.

Someone with one, please describe its sound to me. I just want to make sure this scanner isn't busted.

Surely that would be 16-bits per channel? That's about as good as it gets.

Why, yes it is. Whoops. The comment about the sound remains valid, however.

It DOES scan beautifully - so much better than the 3170, I can't even compare the two. But, it still produces fuzzy chromes. Darn.

The grinding/humming sound is normal. I had a Dimage Scan Dual & it made the same kind of noise.

It sounds like . . . . .the sound of a generator if you are outside with the windows closed. It isn't a gentle grinding sound. Hard to describe sounds. Not the hum of my Epson, but more mechanical and kind of a jerky, vibratory sound - like when trucks are making their way down a steep decline and they apply the compression brakes or whatever those are.

I have the Scan Elite 5400, and an Epson 4180, so I know the hum of the epson and "grind" sound of the Scan Elite. As was stated it is normal. I believe the "grind" is the stepper motor used for focus. My KM does hum, but it "grinds" first. The carrier actually moves laterally (stepper motor/"grind"), before moving in-and-out (scanning).
