Maybe it's my (scanner) fault...I got some "stripes" in the sky scanning greyscale that magically disappear scanning RGB @ 48 bit (Software is Vuescan)
Scanning B&W (look at the sky)

I think that has to be your scanner... it's good that you have a work around. It's raining steady here so I'm going to try a few variations.
