No you do not need to keep the battery in (except if you shoot in auto exposure mode, but if your meter is dead it will not work anyway)

Also, I've found that when using a silver oxide or alkaline battery, the meter badly overexposes (the camera was made for mercury batteries). Maybe its just my camera, but something to watch out for...

thank you my friends I noticed when I put a 1.5v bat in, the meter needle went right to the top and did not move. I am waiting for a light meter to come and I will try it on manual. Thanks Again jack

Did you try to select the ISO/ASA under the lens? It turns on the meter (with lens cap off of course), otherwise it will look dead. As the others said, the camera will work on manual and not in Auto if there are not batteries. I've used the Wein cells with some success, but they didn't last too long.

You need a battery of the same voltage as a mercury cell, which was 1.35v, not 1.5 in silver oxide. I use zinc-air hearing aid batteries, which are 1.4v (close enough) and add a spacer, if necessary as those cells are not wide enough diameter.
The ohter option is to use a Wein cell. Those are quite a bit more expensive than the hearing aid batteries.
It's a nice little camera.

I removed all of the old foam seal and use it bare. So far, I haven't had any light leaks though I do shade it from direct sunlight. I think it's more of a dust seal than anything. To the suggestion of using hearing aid batteries, I'll give that a try.

Hi, Tenter10,
May I ask what specific battery make and model you are using? I ordered a used Hi-Matic 7SII, and I am wondering if the same battery would have the same result in the the camera I get.
I'm new to this old camera thing, but it seems that different batteries have different affects on these old meters.
Thank you,
Robt.

The 7SII is also for mercury batts (http://www.jwhubbers.nl/mug/HiMatic2.html)
I use LiIon batteries in my 7 and simply turn the ASA to one step higher than normally to compensate for the increased voltage. Very simple fix
