i was just going thru my first film roll. 36 exp but the winder got stuck at 24 and the film progress indicator was showing full. wtf? is there any additional setting for film lenght?

There are a number of possible causes, but there is no "setting for length".

Possibilities:

1. It was actually loaded with a 24exp roll and not a 36exp roll.

2. The slip-clutch on the takeup spool is faulty and slipping too easily resulting in a loose wind on the takeup spool. This can cause the film to bind.

3. Something in the shutter and/or wind mechanism has failed and needs repair or replacement.

In my quarter century running camera stores and dealing with customers' problems I saw all three of these quite a number of times.

You can check for #2 by opening the back very carefully in total darkness and feeling the film on the takeup spool. It should be wound snugly around the spool and not loose. After this "test" simply rewind the film so you can then test for #1 and #3.

#1 is not the case-rewound the filma nd took it out. it's 36exp

how does the camera "know" there is film loaded?
when winding w/o film the back indicator does not move, but shot count on the top plate moves ok.

checked with new roll. it went 36exp all the way with cap on, rewound back to casette for future use.
looks like mechanism acted funny on the other one.

In general, it doesn't.

The counter on most cameras, including yours, does not measure the film advance. It merely counts the number of times the lever is advanced. It will count when there is no film and when film is misloaded and not advancing.

Several manufacturers added tell-tales to indicate actual presence of film and its actual movement. The indicator on the back of your camera is one of those tell-tales.

If your roll that stopped at 24 proves to be a full 36exp then one of three things could be the problem:
  1. The camera back was opened, partially or completely, around frame 10-12 resetting the counter
  2. The camera could have been misloaded leaving some inappropriate amount of the leader folded odd or sticking out of the takeup spool which caused the spool to fill prematurely and binding.
  3. The counter could be faulty and its ratchet slipped causing it to reset mid roll.
When the film is processed you can narrow the possibilities. If some frames are fogged at around #10-12 and the last image is near #36 then #1 is the case. If #2 is the case then the last image will be around #24 with 12 exp worth of blank film following. If #3 then there will be a full roll of 36exp with no fogging.

Dwig thank you. I'll try to process the film asap.
as i said this was my first roll, so i might have been sloppy handling the camera.
