Minolta Hi-Matic E question

I bought what looks like a very clean Minolta Hi-Matic E. I still have to find the proper battery for it but my question is if it really needs batteries even for the film advance lever to move. Right now it is locked. I have been told that it does but just want to make sure.

Yes, or you need batteries for the shutter. So your film is advanced waiting for you to use the shutter, and then you can advance the film again (sorry for my bad english)

Ah, so it thinks that there is film in the camera and the shutter is cocked waiting for it to be released. Interesting.
