Mode for legacy lenses

I find that I keep trying to emulate a hexar af with this camera. I'm somehow (Japanese menus being at issue?) not finding a particular sweet spot.

Basically, I set the aperture manually.
I'd like the speed limited to go no lower than 1/60 for shake reasons. I can do this in S mode, but even with auto ISO, the ISO sticks, it seems.

A mode seems to be the best for most situations, but I am not keen on how the shutter speed drops down. I have no idea of the logic applies as pertains to adjusting the ISO and shutter in these situations. Anyone know?

I upgraded my camera to the Sony V3.0 firmware, it's a free download.

I use manual lenses (Canon RF) only, I have never used the auto ISO feature. I use manual mode only, adjust the aperture and ISO as appropriate, and adjust the thumbwheel to adjust the shutter speed up and down, to zero it (normally) and get a correct exposure. If necessary I adjust the ISO and aperture as required, to get me to where I need to be.

This is quick once you are used to it, and works really well for me.

I do the same thing, Nokton48. 🙂 I also tend to use spot metering, so I can meter individual elements in the scene if need be. Having a live histogram makes things almost too easy!

I've played with auto-iso in A mode, and it doesn't work quite like the Hexar AF. The range is 200-1600, and it will sometimes allow a quite slow shutter speed like 1/8th. However, I've got some OK shots hand held at 1/3rd so they're very usable.

I typically use it in A mode, and have the custom center button set for ISO, WB, and DR auto/off.

I shoot in Aperture mode with auto ISO. With manual assist shoots come out clear as a bell.

I have been liking "M" mode a lot: I set aperture on the lens and then can quickly spin through shutter speeds with the dial until it looks good to my eye and histogram is optimized. I use auto ISO for the most part.

You're right - it's sort of greyed out as an option in "M"; I had left it there from being in other modes. I shot around different times and lighting situations today and looking back at the image data, the ISO jumps around from 200 - 1600...I never changed it though. It's mostly 200 unless I dialed in a fast shutter speed and then it tended to go to 1600. There are also some odd values - 1000 and 250 showed up.

If you're using manual lenses, shooting in S mode with auto ISO should be essentially the same thing.

It sounds as though there is no was to throttle the speed. And it would appear that the manufacturers decided that with the anti shake functionality, there was no reason to do so at the expense of ISO noise. Interesting.

I don't want the camera to make crazy decisions for me. So i shoot only in "Manual" and fully control everything. That works for me, it's very fast, and it's consistent.
