Moder M camera with 0.72 viefinder

Yes. It isn't that comfortable but it is possible, though hardly necessary, most of the time.

Yes, although you obviously can't see anything outside the 28mm framelines (I don't wear glasses, BTW.) I tend to treat all the framelines as hazy approximations...

Speaking of framelines: how to the 35mm in the 0.85 compare to the 28mm in the 0.72?

Good question and I just did a quick comparison here. They are about the same, I can't separate them to be honest. I use a 35 on a 0.85mag cam all the time FWIW.

I am a almost total 50mm user, ocassionally 35mm. Is it comfortable using the 35mm on the 0.85? I've always considered this magnification as the best if I ever took the Leica plunge...

I don't wear glasses and I think that is key. To be honest, I'm not a great framer. I have both 0.72 and 0.85 mag cameras, and use the 0.85 for lenses =>50mm, and the 0.72 for lenses =<35mm.

I usually use the 0.72 for my 35, when I said "all the time" up in my previous post what I really meant was that if I need to use the 0.85 for a 35mm lens I have no trouble at all using it on that camera. The reason that lens is on the 0.85 at the moment is that I am trying to finish a roll of film in it. But I do generally use it on the 0.72 because I like to see what's going on outside the framelines.

If you don't wear glasses, and if you don't care what's going on outside the frameslines at 35mm (since you apparently use it so little) then I would say consider a 0.85 mag camera. However a 0.72 mag also suits both lenses well.

I'm sure you know that Leica now only makes 0.72 mag cameras and that if you want either a 0.58 mag or a 0.85 mag body it is either the custom (Leica a la carte) route or used.

Thanks for the informative response Peter. I am a 50mm guy, so I guess I would lean towards the .85, although my final decision would rest on actually looking through them at a dealer.

And that is the best way to choose. I can prattle on for hours but your own eyes are by far the most accurate judge for you. With a 35mm lens and a 0.85 mag cam, you have to move your eye around quite a bit from center to see the framelines. Only you can judge whether that movement, if required, is acceptable to you. Personally I don't bother, I forget about the framelines and just think full frame. I can always crop... 😉
