A RF camera sized like the F-1N SLR? No thanks. But a M-mounted P with TTL metering and AE would be nice.

Not much in it really

my Canon F1N
147 x 97 x 48 mm, 795 g (body only with Eye-Level Finder FN)

my VI-L
144 x 76 x 34 mm, 940 g (body)

all from the Canon camera Museum ......

I played with the Canon G7 last week and it did feel nice, sort of like a RF.

Yeah, but that's a little like saying a brand-new dumpster feels "sort of" like a Lamborghini Gallardo. They're both metallic, smooth, shiny, and nicely sculpted -- but one's a lot more pleasant to sit inside of than the other!

Hate to say this, don't hold your breath. Canon strikes me as an organization not interested in cashing in on nostalgia, even if it was luctrative. Also, bear in mind the camera side of the business is the tail that wags the dog. The real business stream is office products.

I think you are correct. Canon was focused on pushing the envelope of technology very early on. They were an early adopter of electonics in SLR's and quickly abandoned all-mechanical SLR's as soon as electonically control shutters became a common technology (which is a shame in my view since they made solid mechanical cameras).

shelf life

shelf life

Their is a certain shelf-life for film rangefinders and their afficionados the baby boomers. Assume that all those boomers will be dying out in the next 30-40 years. After that will the genX types and their successors be interested in archaic film rangefinders? I doubt it. The camera mfg industy is well aware of that and know it is a niche industry with a limited lifetime.
