modern Summitar UV filter?

Hi all,

I'm finding that I am using a Summitar ("borrowed" from my father 😀) on my IIIf a lot more these days. It is well brassed, but the coating is in pretty good shape - only a minor "bump" mark on the front coating - and I would like to keep it that way.

Is there a "modern" UV filter for the Summitar, with the odd Summitar thread?

I'm really looking for something that will protect the front element without adding flare or a color cast - while allowing me to continue to use the barn door shade.

If you can find the adapter, you'll be able to use new 39mm filters on your Summitar.

It will add a bit of flare, whatever filter you use -It would be wise to take it off in high-contrast situations. I do not know the exact specs of the Summitar, but Heliopan do supply protective filters in the size 37x0.75 and 39x0.5.
In general, if one wants to use a protective filter, these Heliopan ones are the best choice, because they are much tougher than any UV filter and of course, optically impeccable. According to the maker, the glass has been chosen to reduce the negative effects any filter has, which makes sense as they don't have to bother about the additional function to filter UV giving them a wider choice in glass. There has been no necessity to filter UV for the last 40 years, as all major lens producers have made their lenses UV-proof. Leica has been using a lens-kit called Absorban from the middle-fifties onwards to block UV light.

I just found a snap-on 42mm-to-Series VI adapter which fits nicely onto my Summitar. All I need to do is either find a 42mm or Series VI filter. It came with a shade; rather cool. For $15, it was even cooler.

The idea was courtesy of graksi (or graksi, I sorry if I mispelled it)

Hello:

I've had modern polaroid transplanted to old leitz polarizers. Perhaps a new UV filter onto an old summitar filter's mount would do the trick?

Glueing a step up ring onto an original Summitar filter with its glass removed is something I may try to do.

Hello:

I peered into my Summitar #1 yellow. The filter appears to be glued to the mount with no retaining ring. Removal and subsitution of newer 39mm glass looks easy. FrankS' idea might be even better.

Anybody know the solvent to remove the glue? I want to put new glass in a Summitar CF.

Most of my Summitar filters have retainging rings.

probably acetone (nail polish remover). use with full-body coloured glass only, not with stick-on or sandwiched celluloid type. Use a non-hardening glue to stick it together again; metal and glass expand/shrink differently.
