Three module system: back, mount, lens.

Back: contains the sensor, battery, internal memory, cpu, EVF, flash, shutter etc.

Interface to the user - buttons, swithes, dials, connectors, memory card(s) etc.
Interface to the second module- the mount.

Mount: different types depending on the lens - and other factors.
Contains electronic and mechanic parts as necessary. Even a leaf shutter is possible for less vibration and sound.
The back side is common, the front depends on the desired lenses.
There is room for new mount types as well as for all the exsistings.

Lens: any kind...

Such system(s) can manufactured by cameramakers or others.
Highly finetuneable.
Modular.
Upgradeable.

As you can see, I didn't mention the sensor's size as it is possible to build such system on any livewiew sensor - ok at least 4/3.

Would you go for a system like that?

The new Ricoh modular camera is similar to this in concept, although it combines the lens and sensor in one replaceable module. We'll have to watch how it sells in order to judge the concept's success.

I will be very interested if it has the sensor size of S2/645D; it has at least features the E-P2 has; it has body size at most a 500c/m;
and a retail price no more than a used M8.2

Wouldn't it be a game-changer if Ricoh later announces that you can upgrade the sensor in the lens unit?

It could make it the world's first digital camera without sensor obsolescence.
