Monochrom due?

Congrats, Cal!

Get an external monitor to go with the 15" Macbook Pro you'll inevitably be purchasing. NECs are nice...

And enjoy! I still need to make it down to NYC and meet up with you guys sometime...

Thanks for the response. The 17 inch is very appealing and was my first thought.

Cal

The 17 has been discontinued. I just bought a new 13 to scale down size and weight from my 15 and was discussing my wife's 17 when the sales guy said they're not making the 17 any longer. He said they never sold well.

Want a really nice condition 15" ?

I think I have a creative solution. The NEC is likely in the future. My gal is a techno weenie who is kinda wired even though she is old like me. She has an Air-book for its portability and needs it for teaching, conferences and trainings, but she states that the screen is too small. Anyways its an easy sell to a techno weenie to get a hot rodded computer with a Rentina screen and flash memory.

I'm thinking of using external hard drives to segragate our work, this way the flash memory is best utilized for processing speed.

Also Apple has a one year zero APR program that makes the cash flow easy.

Is the NEC a flat screen? Also I will mention that I have a work area where I could set it up where I won't have complaints (woman factor). I'd like to get a rather large display because I want to print big.

We have guests from all over the world come all the time. We have a great group and lots of talent. Definitely PM me and I'll show you parts of the city that are kinda unihabited.

Thank's for the opportunity and the offer, but the Apple offer solves the cash flow bottleneck.

"Anyways imagine trying to develop 60 rolls of film a month in a luxury one bedroom apartment you share with a girlfriend."

Yeah, good luck luck with that! Wait till you're married with children!

Keith,

Artist like me live in sin. LOL. Also why would I want to pay more taxes by combining our incomes?

Anyways I'm a lucky guy because Maggie (not her real name, but I'm the only person who call's her by that name) is really low maintenance and she puts up with my snoring and my many other bad habits. Maggie even offered to buy me a M9 when they first became available because I spoiled her so.

The only bad thing is that Maggie does let me go out by myself night shooting anymore after she saw my negatives of these desolate places that I kind of love for their urban decay and moody lonelyness.

We'll get together soon.

Getting a close to 8 G's camera and then not go for a pro display doesn't seem such a good option. Had a cheap Acer display and then switched to a NEC 271W, these are worlds apart.

Icebear,

Thanks for suggesting the NEC 271W. It seems like the way to go. I'll check my work space tonight to see if it will fit. Living in Madhattan teaches one to limit posessions to the least amount, but when you make any purchase always go for the best.

Cal, honestly, I wouldn't get a $1300 display just yet. Make sure you actually find the digital workflow rewarding. The MM is a hell of a camera and that won't be that much different shooting wise than a film M. However, using software is just not for some people. You can certainly make do with the laptop screen at first. I will calibrate it for you and you can then decide later, once you are comfortable, what screen to get. At least the laptop won't be a waste since your gal will be using it. I know you, think about it. lol

John,

I'm pretty certain that I'll love the Monochrome, especially since I have a bit of a log jam with film developing in an apartment.

I definitely will not be getting an upgraded monitor right away. I don't even need the Mac until I get the camera delivered in perhaps November. I imagine the M9M will allow me to shoot more, and its pretty easy to see that digital could be 50% of my shooting.

Anyways because of my engineering background I tend to daydream and think ahead.

Cal, it's not the camera I'm worried about. :) Remember, you don't even like to text (i.e. hate cell phones) and you don't even use a computer at home currently. :)

Texting stops me from shooting: I like shooting more. Talking on a cell phone stops me from shooting: I like shooting more. Some people waste their lives on Facebook, but I'd rather walk around NYC and go shooting. Wasting time on a computer is best at work when I'm being paid, but I'd rather be shooting. LOL.

I think the Monochrome will allow me to shoot more.

BTW Apple offers a discount to academics so Maggie can get this discount. I thing it's something like 10%.

there's nothing more enjoyable than walking around NYC shooting away without distraction!

Come on man, you aren't shooting 24/7.

I'm shooting more than ever, especially since I started walking to work. Been carrying two Leicas this past week.

Anyways it's not too much of an exaggeration that some people seem to text as much as I shoot, although at work I often waste a lot of time on this forum, but I'm at work. LOL.

Anyways wish me luck tonight on Fashion Night Out.

Its been 3 weeks and I just moved from number 16 to number 15.

Anyways it seems inadvertantly I'm not going to be an early adopter. I did the right thing and bought from one of our sponsors who I've been very happy with in the past.

Waiting...

Hi Cal,

I signed up for the Leica Monochrom workshop in NYC next week and I'll make a final decision after that but it's unlikely that this will screw it up ;).
I'm going to buy locally but have no idea yet about how many are on the waiting list in front of me...

For your new Mac: In case you costom built , don't worry too much about internal disk space or SSD vs reg. hard drive but max out the RAM for photo editing. I have a reg. desktop, where it was pretty easy to clip in additional 2x 8GB by myself but this is not an option for a Macbook.

Klaus,

The local taxes are a big bullet to bite. Already I'm reading about making digital negatives for contact printing, and from that reading I understand how RAM is used for speed, especially with big file sizes it does not take much to use all that RAM.

One of the bonuses is that I have a boring day job that sometimes will allow me to exploit the portability of a Mac where I can play around at work.

I've ordered a thumbs up and a Giotto screensaver already for my MM, which I have not yet ordered...

At the last Meet-Up I felt Jeff's MD-Grip on his Leica M8. I think I will get one.

Another friend is giving me this monster 8 color printer. His wife says its too big for their apartment. He states that it makes great B&W prints.

I already know that my 28 Cron and 50 Lux will be killer, but I wonder how the 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM will perform, or the 75 Lux.

Not sure I will need a Noct-Nikkor anymore...
