.....And as for walking poles being "wimpy" thats fine if you don't have arthritis or other back problems, I do and find it extremely helpful at times.
It's also good for tossing poisonous reptiles out of the way and helping with balance when footing gets tricky such as crossing a log bridge. It's no fun to lose one's balance, particularly when carrying a heavy pack.
I took my favorite walking stick and epoxied a 1/4 in. threadsert into the knob on top. Instant mono pod. The hardwood stick had a proven track record as an oversize shillelagh.
The 1/4 in. thread also allows for other accessories, in case you have an old Buick hood ornament lying around.
