more Epson R-D1 IR images

As promised I did some more experimenting with the R-D1 and a R72 (89B) filter.

I have posted seven images all shot at ISO 200 or 400 (to be compared with others shot at ISO 1600).

The noise, as expected, is generally lower but there appears to be horizontal banding in areas of constant gray density (i.e., skies). This seems to be more pronounced at ISO 200 then at ISO 400 but either way is not good.

I used Photoshop to minimize this banding as best I could but it's not always easy to do.

Next, I will do a series at ISO 800 (always +1 1/3 IE) to see what kind of results I get.

David, nice photos!

I went for a walk today, and by coincidence, took the R-D1 with the R72 attached. Not much sun and no blue skies, sadly!

These were shot at around 1/30s (in the sun) to 1/8s (in the shade) hand held with the Elmarit 21/2.8 at f4, ISO 800.

These are in-camera jpgs, mono with green filter option, levels in PS. I find I get about 2 stops less ISO speed with the green filter (or green channel in RAW) but it seems to give more contrast, and a sharper image than the red channel, which dominates a colour image.

Your images are very nice too. The tonality of your images looks smoother then some of mine.

I am using B&W mode and the red filter. This does add a significant amount of increased exposure sensitivity but perhaps at the expense of some tonality improvement. The images I get are rather flat and do require a fair amount of contrast amping in Photoshop.

Being able to hand-hold is a primary consideration mine but I will try using the green filter and compare that to what I have been getting so far. At the moment I'm at 30th of a second and above. Since I sometimes use the CV 12mm f/5.6 lens, speed is an issue.
