Joe, for my tastes, go with the little girl. It's a warm, interesting photograph and a well-caught moment.

Damn Joe - are those new scans? They look great!!

I love the Soup shot and would be tempted to crop the right hand side of it to just behind her arm as the upper right is a bit distracting to the main subject - in my eyes that is :)

i have been working on photoshop when i have extra time, coupled with the juicy tidbits i glean from you guys, i think i'm getting a bit better.

but there is just so much to learn...

Joe, another 'trick' for online posting (since the free version sizes down the image quite a bit) is to use www.neatimage.com to really make your images look smoooth :)
 
rich, i'm not sure what you're saying, free version of what? neatimage is like photoshop?

wayne, no problem, i appreciate your time and energy.
i prefer the original for several reasons, i like the softer, less contrasty look (she is a soft little girl). the place was busy and i like that the pic shows that, and it was crowded, so the extra hands in the background (reading the paper) fits for me.
she was in her own little world eating her soup.

I thought that you like the warmer softer type of photos. I was just cropping a la rsilverberg's suggestion. You may delete the post if you wish.

As you can probably tell I like harsher more contrasty type photos.

guess i'm just an old softie! ;)

i'm fine with leaving the photos up, i think it's a great way for others to learn also.
i played lots when i first started to use a wet darkroom (many moons ago) and varying the contrast was a good learning experience for me.
if you look in my folder, one of my 3 coffee & camera shots (of the canon p) is higher in contrast and i quite like it.
i guess it depends on the shot.

Joe, neatimage is a stand-alone program.
You can download the trial/free-version and then open up a photo in it. You then apply various degrees of 'blurring' to soften the image (the effect is to get rid of pixelation or grain and leave very smooth looking images). It's kind of fun to play with the effect. :)
 
doh! the neatimage has a free version, i missed that completely.
i think it's time for bed for me.
doesn't photoshop have something similar to that blur effect?
i'll have to try that soon.

I like Joe's version of Soup and Seat photos. Sorry Wayne, but to me, your version has too much contrast and excessive USM.

Neatimage is a pretty good tool Joe. You have to be careful though if you have fine details in the photo. Neatimage may smoothen it out thinking it as noise. I don't see the point of using Neatimage on any of your photo here though.
 
By the way, high contrast and lots of USM fits well with some subjects, i really like it in some cases, just not with the little girl...
 
I too like the original Soup Girl. It has that "Depression Era" look about it. The tones remind me of "Sharecropper's Wife" (can't remember title, can look it up at home).

Joe, what lens did you use? Not that I have a vested interest of course...
