I like Ken Rockwell's work and I respect his opinion. Rockwell said:

Forget the Fuji Finepix X100.
I just looked at this sample gallery, and the images are soft, low-contrast,
lower resolution, and boring compared to my D7000,
much less the full-resolution samples I share in my new Route 66 Gallery from a LEICA M9.
Who are Fuji trying to kid; children who think iPhones are cool?
I love Fuji — Fuji Velvia 50! Now that's photography!
When you can get this from a Fuji digital camera, wake me up.

I've read some of his articles- and they seem more like "my word is Gospel" than an in-depth review. His experience with the 50/1.1 Nokton and my own are at odds. He does not understand that he does not understand. Lenses of that speed often are made to match the manufacturers assumptions about their own camera- factors such as film flatness. Throw it on a different camera, like an M9- minor adjustments are required. Add 0.05mm to the RF cam, his problems would have been gone.

What people do not understand about what he understands is that it is all showmanship. Really. Ken is a great person and always answers my email in an honest, thoughtful manner. He is also a great photographer. What he is doing is different than dpreview and all the other sites and that is his draw. Smart marketing.:)

KR should be commended for putting a lot of good PR for Leica and film photography online. Who else is going to do it?;)

They all look like my iPhone snaps.

No camera has ever, or will ever, be made that lets everyone take great pictures. However, some cameras do something far more important, they let people take more pictures.

The X100 will do this for all of us who don't like to use a DSLR, a teeny little compact with no OVF, but need to transition to film.

The more you learn about photography the more you learn Ken Rockwell just stirs the pot to bring hits to his site. He just goes against the grain in his 'reviews.'

He used to only shoot JPG and claim that the D40 was the words best camera, now he only thinks film is decent.

Maybe if he understood the potential of a RAW digital file he could get it to look like Velvia. But if he's going to throw away his pictures by shooting jpg, he deserves to hate on good cameras.
