I have a Rollei 35 (Tessar) and I enjoy it but sometimes I feel that 40mm is too wide. 50mm is perfect. I hope that a Leica IIIc + Elmar would fulfill my compactness needs. Unfortunately, I do not like folders or digital cameras.

What are the most compact Elmar Hood Solutions? And how do the camera/lens/hood combinations compare with the Rollei 35 (in terms of compactness)? Any pictures of the two, collapsed, with hood? Are there any collapsible rubber hoods for the Elmar?

Hi i love taht combo iii + elmar.

I have a fikus hood, that is not so small but there is another one called FISON, try that one i had it in a Ic ourfit.

Anyway the elmar can be shot easily without hood!

🙂

FOOKH is the smallest hood I can think of for the collapsible Elmar.

But the suggestion of a CV Color-Skopar 50/2.5 is very smart, if you're not wedded to the idea of vintage glass.

I'm looking for something that rivals the rollei 35 in compactness.

I can fit my rollei 35 in my coat pocket comfortably and in my pants pocket with a bulge. I have never seen the skopar in person but I don't believe that it is compact enough.

An Elmar without a hood is perhaps the solution.

i have another question.

What are the more flare-resistant compact/collapsible lenses?

How do these compare? Elmar 50/3.5 and Industar-22 50/3.5, and maybe Canon/Nikon/Cosina equivalent compacts?

Remember, I am looking for something tiny and in ltm. i'm not too familiar with what Canon/Nikon/Cosina have to offer.

As I have both, a IIIf + Elmar (basically same body as IIIc) and a Rollei35, both next to me and a scanner running... I just scanned both cameras for you 😉
so you can compare their sizes.

If carrying the lens collapsed is acceptable, then I would recommend going w/something faster, like the LTM collapsible Summicron or Summitar, as the lenses aren't much bigger than the Elmars & f/2 can be very useful.

Not sure if there's a small hood option for the Summitar, but the modern 12549 screw-in works fine on the collapsible Summicron, & I know from personal experience that the combo (when collapsed on a Barnack) will easily fit in a coat pocket (I doubt I have pants pockets big enough to carry any "real" camera).

No, it's not quite that compact. It's almost exactly the same size and shape as a 35/2.8 Summaron.
But that's darned compact for a non-collapsible 50mm lens!

I'm confused why your buying gear on the one criteria of it being compact...

The most compact hood option for an elmar is a A36 filter without glass.

because I want a compact camera.

I already have an M2, M3, and a suite of M lenses (rigid/non-compact). I also have a few other cameras, but my most compact camera (that I use) is my Rollei 35.

In practice, you wont find a barnack to be much more compact than a M body with a collapsible lens. The raised/moving dials of a barnack are counter productive to pocket-ability.

If compact you mean depth, you wont find much benefit in a barnack.
The M models are only negligibly taller, but have less protruding controls.

Your Rollei is about as small as they come with comparable glass to Leica.
Ide suggest a Leica CL or Minolta CLE to compliment your M lenses, possibly adding a cheaply had Elmar 50/3.5 and appropriate adapter. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the pic, Filzkoeter!

Let me elaborate in my quandry.

I typically carry a Leica M3 + 50mm lens (50/2.0 DR Cron or a 50/1.5 Contax Sonnar) when I am actively shooting (Weekends) and a Rollei 35 when I'm not actively shooting (Weekdays). I feel that this combination works pretty well except for the two different focal lengths. Although the difference is slight, I find myself wishing that the Rollei 35 were 50mm.

I have tried carrying my M3/50mm lens but the camera/lens is too heavy and large. I have tried using Retina's and the CL but I don't like either. So now I want to swap the Rollei 35 for a Leica IIIc + collapsible as my daily carry, or pick up a collapsible for my M3. For the collapsible, it is mostly down to the 50 f3.5 Elmar or the 50 f2.0 Summitar/Summicron. Both lenses are different and so I may end up getting both, haha.

Hi,

I think you'll be up against a problem in that small cameras with a prime lens started getting away from the 50mm standard and got wider and wider as time went by; although, of course, that also made them smaller. The 40mm of the Rollei and Cl being an early start to the trend and it ended at about 24mm (a Pentax?).

In your shoes, I'd also be looking at the weight of a IIIC + Summitar and size with a lens hood. The Summitar chosen as it takes a wide range of hoods from different makers.

Anyway, I'll wish you luck.

Regards, David

Can I make some suggestions?

A summitar or summicron still projects quite a bit so an Elmar 3.5 will be most compact. But add a hood and nothing will be compact!

If it is a matter of matching focal lengths, have you considered the possibility of a 40mm for the M3? Framing might be hard but it is an option. Or a goggled 35?

The Soviet collapsible Tessar variants also work with a Barnack for a compact system. Comparable to a 3.5 Elmar but not to the 2.8s.

A CL with 50mm? But collapsing would be out of the question.

This is a complex question and becomes a matter of personal preference. An M camera, even with an Elmar 3.5 50mm is too big for me and my pockets. My Rollei 35 is a bit too thick. My Retina IIa just doesn't feel right but my IIIc and Elmar does, just barely. I keep thinking I want a faster lens but then it becomes about as large as an M camera. I've found I can do a lot with the f3.5 aperture. To help protect the camera, I made a long thin bag the IIIc slips into, I fold the excess over the front of it and it slips easily into the pocket of my jeans. Yes, it's a little big but acceptable. Anything larger would not work for me. The lens does not flare much and I only carry a hood if it's in a bag with a few other lenses. When I put a 50mm Summar on the camera it becomes bigger than I prefer to pocket altho I have on occasion. Sounds like you really need to try this setup before you buy. A IIIc, Elmar and hood may or may not work for you. Good Luck. Joe

I have an Elmar 50/2.8 LTM lens that I use with a Nikon 39mm filter. The Nikon filter rim just sticks out a little bit which seems to be good enough to eliminate most flare. And the 50/2.8 has an external aperture ring, so the filter can stay on. Note that the Elmar design is pretty flare proof by itself. And a clean 50/2.8 is comparable in price to a clean 50/3.5. At least min was last year (around 300 bucks in grade 9 from B+H).

I can recommend that setup with any Barnack.

Roland.
